Why would you risk buying rep solid gold?

What if the "solid gold" rep you bought for maybe around $1000 isn't really solid?

What I mean is, they may not be coated on, but they aren't really solid gold all the way... how can you tell? The only way to know is to take only the "solid gold" case, weigh them and compare it with the gen case. Not very possible, huh?

Mate, solid gold rep will be alot just buy the real thing.

Sold gold rep is what about say 200grams for a rollie. Thats already 200/31.1 = 6.43 ounces of gold weight alone. Say 18k gold so 0.75 = 4.8 Ounces.

1 ounce = $1200 USD = approx 6k in gold alone. Add cost of melting and crafting etc etc..............LOL think about it. You can buy 18k gold second hand to save money.

Hi just did a scrap gold calculation DDII weights 220 grams let's say 170g minus movement and crystal. It's 18 karat factor that times current usd scrap gold values works out to $4846.93 worth of gold scrap Value. before cost to refine and shape lol

All I'm trying to say if the current reps were Solid gold in the 5k range for a DDii it would be a good deal for a perfect rep. We're not talking about a watch you buy second hand for 8k we're talking about a 25-30k watch a lot of people are saying just buy a gen but a 36mm watch might as well be a females watch by today's standards and I'm not interested in the old DD or DJ so if there was another option for a solid gold DDii at 20% the cost of the gen I would buy. Your paying with PayPal so you take the gold to get tested upon arrival and if it's not right you open a help desk ticket worst case is a chargeback and you get your money back safe and sound(with permission of course).

Rolex machines out the lug ends and the case walls to reduce the amount of gold used to manufacture the case. There´s less gold in it than You´d think.

Rolex 15238 sample (not a DJII)

The pictures above show the 18kt. gold Rolex case and band for the Rolex 18238 Registered Design. The band weighs 73.18 grams, the case weighs 22.8 grams, the case back weighs 10.87 grams and the bezel weighs 5.18 grams. As it´s 18ct Gold the real gold content will be more than 20% less.

Why on earth would you pay 5k for a rep when you can buy a second hand Day Date for around 10k..

interesting info from all contributers.... on hindsight, i would think that solid gold is soft and causes problems over time with wear... why dont you go gen at that price range? many great gens to choose from

Not really, the application of Archimedes principle will tell you if it's solid or not. All that needs is an accurate measuring beaker and a table of gold volume by weight. Remember it's this exact situation that the great man came up with displacement theory to deal with.

You would still need to strip the watch down but that's not hard.

You show me a gen DDii for 10k and I'll buy 2 lol the whole reason for this discussion is because the original 36mm DD is too small you wouldn't loose too much on it either because your paying for the weight of gold and whatever it costs to make a rep DD

Gold on the Comex today hit a 5 year low. Now's the time boys and girls. Step in and BUY!!!

And for the naysayers that think you're going to get hit with all kinds of smelting fees and other wastes for grinding or stamping or finishing, that's not how it works. You're pretty much charged on the actual weight of the gold used. Jewelry makers don't consider anything not put into the jewelry as waste. There is nothing wasted. It goes right back into the smelter. Even if the smelter is small enough that it's sitting on his desk.
