Just mill a piece of tungsten and have it gold plated. It would weigh almost exactly the same as solid gold and cost less than $500.
Piece of cake. Pardon me why I run out to my garage and mill up a quick tungsten Submariner case. Be right back.
Sorry but making an actual gold one is much more practical and it'll always be worth the value of the amount of gold in it, unlike the tungsten one with will never be worth anything.
Is it more practical because you are knowledgeable about goldsmithing or because you think it is simpler. Most likely the you would have to hire a company to mill or cast the form so the skill involved is irrelevant and the cost (of manufacture) would be comparable.
Regardless if you spend $40 on the tungsten or $4000 on the gold you would only have the value of the material because it would still be a rep.
