Rep Gold Plating

I've seen a lot of conversations and questions about rep plating on watches. I've had quite a few throughout the years, but here is a good example. This is the ARF bracelet that I purchased some years back. I wore this regularly . I have personally polished this three times and the gold has never faded. The watch itself is about 6 years old and worn regularly as well. I think that the key is to take care of what you wear. If you swing your wrist around like a neanderthal, you can't expect the watches to hold up. I have a couple of friends with gen TT Subs and they look horrible in hand. The gold is scratched beyond belief. Hope this helps some of you make the decision. It's a fallacy that good quality wrapped gold reps fade easily with use. A lot depends on YOU and how you care for your time piece.

This has been really helpful. I look after my watches (both gen & rep) but the plating issue never really entered my head until now. Feel more confident buying TT future⌚😁👍

What is "Florida Man" going to do, that's different from anywhere else ?
The humidity is supposed to be especially rough on gold plating, I’m wondering how the quality of CF plating has held up for anyone who owns them living here and for how long they’ve owned them in this environment.

My CF Oysterflex "pikachu" asnt lasted, I baby my reps but there's some slight tarnishing after a year around the edge of the lugs, clasp, and end links (where they meet the rubber). I wipe it down everytime I wear it and I also leage it in a anti tarnish bag. But to be expected.

But my plated daydate has no tarnishing lol

I use a Connoisseurs Gold Jewelry Polishing Cloth. NOT THE SILVER ONE, but the Gold one. You can find the silver one everywhere, Walmart, CVS, etc., but the Gold specific one I could only find on Amazon. It’s amazing.

So how often should one be using this gold cloth on the plating? I was enquiring about a clean Daytona YG/SS and the seller straight away was like the plating wont last so be aware of thi…. i know if i keep on top of the maintenance it’ll be fine.

As with cars, I’d much rather protect than polish. I plan to try at least one protective product on gold reps.

Prevention is most definitley better than cure; so what product you thinking of implementing?

I just recently was told about Renaissance Wax. I’ll get it from Amazon. In the past I tried car sealants and waxes.

Renaissance Wax is supposedly different. Different formulation. I think it said you can even use it on paper!

Yes Renaissance Wax was formulated to protect metal not paintwork. It seems to be a clear film on the metal rather than a polish.

Im filled with a whole lot more confidence purchasing that clean 2 tone Daytona now. Gonna get on the blower tomorrow and get it ordered. It’s just swallowing the fact its going to cost 898 USD plus shipping 🙈

Ceramic coating (like Drexler) has also been suggested around here before. Haven't tried it myself. I got a sticker for my two-tone clasp (for desk diving) and called it a day.

Im not gonna thinking about it too much now else ill end up flapping it; im gonna buy the watch, apply that wax, try to not be a savage when wearing it and just wipe it down after wearing it.

I now have the wax. I didn’t realize how small the can is. Upon inspection, it just looks like simple wax. I hope it works its magic though. I have some two tone models to use it on but I’ll just wait for a YG DD to arrive

I'm sure you know but to prepare wax make sure the intial surface is immaculate. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
