Didn't realize we had so many golfers on RWI. I had picked up on Guru's passion but not the rest of you guys. Managed to get in my 2nd round of the year on Sat; a balmy 42 degF.

I have the pleasure of playing with a group of guys on Saturday's that are old hands at getting Tee times. We manage to play around 30 different courses every year; mainly in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts. I also have 5 golf courses within 2 miles of my house which is kinda handy.

The biggest drawback is the long NE winter; 5 months of nothing. Looking forward to the golf league that starts in 2 or 3 weeks time.

I'm with you PHicks.

Here in the Delaware Valley its still a bit brisk, but a good round can be had if its sunny. Still a bit wet though.

The Masters typically marks the time of year when the golf mania takes over - after seeing all that beautiful greenery in Augusta.

:D

thanks!

now back to golf:
i haven't played regularly for at least 13 years but i used to live in the L.A. area and a friend and i would play all the various extremely cheap and numerous par 3 courses at least twice a week. i would regularly shoot just over par and sometimes get a few shots under par.

today would be a different story though; had shoulder surgery last year and i don't think i'll ever be the same.

still skateboarding though

I have a tee time at Triggs Memorial in Providence RI tomorrow morning. Nice old course designed by Donald Ross, a famous NE course designer.

Its interesting that you can always spot a old course by the short distance between the green and next tee. When these courses were designed they never considered the concept that there would be a group behind you hitting up to the green.

which always works good for me since I try to walk 18 rather than ride a cart. With some of these newer courses you are forced to take a cart because of great distances between tees and greens. I find the game much more enjoyable when walking but there seems to be more golfers riding these days. But when the hot summer rolls around a cart does come in very handy.

Is anyone even paying attention to the tournament this weekend? I think everyone is already thinking Masters. :D

Only time I take a cart is for charity scrambles. A couple of years ago we played at a course in Mass that insisted that we pay for a cart even though we were walking. Needless to say we haven't played there since. I have no problem with carts, I just prefer to get the exercise and save the money.

These Donald Ross courses can be long. Given that most were built around the turn of the century its amazing that anyone could reach the green in 2 with a hickory shaft and a ball made from a wound up elastic band. But I guess they did make watches that were accurate and reliable at that time without the aid of CAD or carbon fiber.

Looks like a number of the private courses around here will be going public shortly; a sign of the times I guess. I wonder what the green fees will be for a course that last year was looking for $100,000 in membership fees? If it's more than $50 then I won't be there.

Ya I play about 3 scrambles a year for charity too but I have to say I don't think I've ever played a Donald Ross course. Several private clubs around here too are offering incentives to join but I just hate to commit to paying the monthly fees.

I remember reading the driving stats for the year 1970 and Jack Nicklaus was averaging over 270 yards with a wooden club and often he would use a 3 wood. But when he wanted to hit it 300 yards he could. I would like to see one tournament played each year where the pros had to use wooden clubs with smaller heads and balata golf balls hehe...That would be interesting although I wonder if the scores would be much different? I guess they would need to shorten the yardage but even back then in the 60's and 70's there were some courses that were over 7000 yards, Firestone and Spyglass Hill come to mind.

I'm fortunate in that my partner is really good at booking tee times. He has a list of all the courses and knows what time to call them to get a Sat morning tee time. Without this list we would be doomed. If it wasn't for 'Pat' I would probably join a local club but I prefer the challenge of playing a different course each week.

Sat sucked! It was cold, windy and worst of all the ground was water laden. I had forgotten how difficult it was to hit a wedge from a really wet lie; it's like playing from sand. Worse still, when you hit a good drive followed by a nice 3 wood and you're still 30 feet shot of the green it gets frustrating; but I guess that's the nature of the game.

Shennecossett in New London, Ct is another Ross course opened in 1898. It has a slope of 122 which makes it tougher than the average of 113. Located on the coast next to the Viagra facility it has some nice turtle back greens that can be challenging to say the least plus a lot of deep fescue grass. I agree, it would be great to see a tournament played with early clubs and balls on one of these early courses. Why not?, it could be the basis of a great charity event.

I was in Cambridge Ohio a couple of years ago and played a couple of local courses. I think the most I payed was $20 a round. Nice courses, nice people. I remember seeing the local school kids getting out for their league round; I think it was like $5 a head. Now that's golf; great to see.

What happened to that golf thread that Guru was going to start?
