I highly doubt they really use gens as sample. Maybe pics of gens, but actual watches? I think that's a dream.

For numerous reasons, the first being that most of the watches that I've had in hands and that are supposed to be made with "gen as sample" are not actually built like the gens, or with the same measurements as the gens.
But the main reason is that they simply don't need to: it's way cheaper to pretend you're using a gen as sample than actually doing it. And if you consider the discussion we're having right now, it seems just as efficient.

Well they certainly didnt use the gen here as the gen isnt available yet for a few months.
This using a gen in the making is an interesting subject deserving its own thread.
I can see not using one in the old days but these day with all the technology the time it would save AND the accuracy of some of the reps id say at times they must be using the gen.
WIZ is a watch-smith which is why i asked him as most of dont really know and are speculating.
With reping off photos id imagine it would be about ALOT more time consuming vs using a physical copy machine but then labor is CHEAP. Would be alot of trail and error. but then....
I think ill start a thread in the general section and we can get back to pointing out how awful the color is on this rep.

Mate, I really don't have the energy right now to enter that kind of debate one more time, but to make it short, the problem is that you're seing all this with westerner's eyes. The chinese culture is very different from ours, that include the way they do business.
If you had worked with Chinese you would understand how silly it is to believe they would spend 10% of the money necessary for their operation to buy a gen to copy from.
They're not trying to produce 1:1 copies of the gens. They're trying to make watches that can pass as gens. And that's a pretty big difference.
Lastely, of course you will always find one or two counterexamples, but 95% of the time this will apply.

Ok, so the rep is "full of flaws" for us, whereas most people out there have never ever heard of Panerai to start with. Anyway, I'll order one once I've got the funds, simply because the watch looks so darn sexy, that IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE I rather have a "bad rep.", than none at all.
Remember the days before the internet forums where all we could get where some REALLY bad picture based reps. of the Submariner and Sea Dweller when on vacation in the rep. (pun intended) of Turkey? - Boy, we've come a long way. Imagine how we'd be thrilled over a rep. like this back then. This is the first attempt Gentlemen! It's only a bar that's been set FOR NOW and it'll have to be raised whenever a new version is released...
