I didnt realise Replica was a thing, I always thought ultra cheap watches when on stopover in asia were called "fakes".

I have a few genuine watches, not huge value but sentimental, ie birthday Omega. I only where watches at work or like jewelry as I dont wear necklaces or rings etc.

I really like Panerai Luminors. But will never have the money for one. How good are replicas? am I going to have the guy at work who wants to just be the bully, know quite easily if its a replica?

I assume there are some sites with better replicas than others? Is it legal to import a "replica"?

Cheers all.

Hi and welcome to RWI! Glad you found your way here.

The biggest tell is you.

Please take some time to read the sticky threads in the new members area (all subsections), learn the basic forum rules and get some very good advice in the process. A number of questions has already been answered there, this is just an example:

As a new subscriber, you've already been directed to this thread, please read carefully and look through the linked additional threads:

Another good thread to read to understand where RWI comes from and some fundamentals is this:

Most of the information you need to know to start is there. If you're preparing to buy, read the stickies before ordering. When you're finished, you can continue learning by reading the stickies in all remaining sections. If it's stickied, it's important information.

If you intend to sell, read the sales rules and all stickies in the sales section with particular care and make sure you understand each single rule. Sales rules infraction is taken very seriously here. As a new member you are not eligible to sell. Using the sales section is a privilege, eligibility must be earned, make sure you know and understand how.

For anything else, feel free to reach out to @eBoy or me, we're happy to assist, advise, direct, explain. Don't hesitate.

Don't be afraid to post noob questions in the new members area. In doubt, use the flame free zone. If you feel uncomfortable anywhere in the new members area, please reach out to @eBoy or me. Mutual respect is of utmost importance to us. On the other hand, we're grown-ups and are supposed to be able to deal with a bit of irony, don't take it personally, ever, a bit of irony never harmed anyone. If you laugh at jokes, you'll make friends faster.

This forum is a treasure trove of information and benefits from the engagement of all members who take their time to share their knowledge, help each other out and have some fun. We hope that you'll benefit and enjoy this platform as well as contribute positively to it.

If at any point you feel to contribute also on another level, feel free to pm the boss (trailboss99) to become a supporter and get some little perks with the status (editing rights, for example).

Enjoy the forum.

People don't understand the difference between omega and Rolex price wise.

Also, if you're worried about being called out, don't wear it.

Replicas are about fun while wearing them. Having the watch you'd like at a price that makes your heart giggle.

Thanks, was meant to be in the say hi thread.

I would think most people wont know if my genuine Omega Seamaster 600 is real or not either, so its really there problem not mine is how I see it.

But that is why, people have in the past have tried to have a friendly banter that my watches are "fake" which annoyed me as they have sentimental value which is a huge reason I wear them, they remind me of important people to me.

Just say yes it's fake. And keep it moving.

No matter Gen or not. If it's Gen, it makes them jealous. If it's fake they're gonna laugh.

You're not gonna win either way. So just go for the laughs.

there are. and then there are some mindblowing reps

Omega in gen is already untouchable by most of the world's population. Wear it with pride.

I really like Panerai Luminors. But will never have the money for one. How good are replicas? am I going to have the guy at work who wants to just be the bully, know quite easily if its a replica?

A good VSF PAM is impossible to spot from work social distance. Do your research on the most well replicated models. Just the research is a lot of fun.

But you need to be able to wear it with your head up. The watch is only fake when the man is fake 😁

If you are really really nervous because people will know you cannot afford the gen, buy a custom vintage rep from M2M. You can always pass it as an inheritance from an obscure uncle 😅

I assume there are some sites with better replicas than others? Is it legal to import a "replica"?

It is in most countries. In some places, it's illegal to own or wear one.

Buy one. You can always resell it here when you meet your post quota.

This will allow you to experience it yourself. If you like it, great. If you don't you won't lose much.

Haha that is what I do with the watch my in laws bought me, its genuine, but I just tell people its a fake.

I didnt mean to make it sound a big deal, I just posted more to see if others have had to deal with this, genuine or replica.

I think because I have a few low value genuine watches and wear them, people wonder if they real because I wear them with pride because I miss the people behind them etc. :)

My friend, trust me on this, try a modded vintage Rolex rep like a 1016, 5513, 1680 or 1665
It will suit your character very well

Im starting to understand replicas already.

I didnt even know there were custom vintage replicas :)

I think when I have some spare change, I might buy a panerai luminor. Seems a logical place for me to start.

as a spearfisherman, Ive always wanted a grandmaster seiko dive. I have a garmin dive computer for in the water to avoid shallow water black out etc. But the Grand Seiko would suit my maritime lifestyle.

I hate answering a question with a question, but.

Are you wearing the watch for yourself or for others?

I'll tell you my answer, I want yours.

I wear mine for myself. My rule of thumb is not to wear something I couldn't personally go into an Authorized Dealer and pick up a gen of or used to due to Inflation. I certainly won't wear a Richard Mille or a Patek (other than an Aquanaut cuz I love those), but even then wearing an Aquanaut, I feel self-conscious.

My collection is varied and I've had several Panerai's. No one will ask you if it's real, they'll ask why does it look like that, re: the crown guards.

If we wear stuff for others, it really cheapens out this hobby. If you're doing it for appearances, you're really only fooling yourself. Life is too darn short to care what others things and deprive you of things you like.

Obviously I wear for myself, it was simply wondering if others get asked that question. Personally I wear watches often for practicality, hence the seamasters and dive watches.

I also dont care if other peoples are original or rep or a no name brand, if I like how it looks I might ask for a closer look. So many very nice non big brand watches these days, some of these are more practical for work than my dive watch.

You will always get asked that question.

Somebody once posted when he wears his vsf submariner nobody says anything to him, but when he wears a cheap Breitling rep people say is that real?

same here. AP and RM are not for me.
I'd love a Patek some day, but I will never wear it at work. It would be for my enjoyment only.

I phrased my response as I did since you did mention the following on your initial post:

am I going to have the guy at work who wants to just be the bully, know quite easily if its a replica?

Which would indicate that you do have some certain care to what someone else might say about your watch.

In theory, it really is up to you what to say if someone asks. I had a coworker tell me today someone asked him if his Fossil was a Rolex.

People have no clue. Do what you want, buy what you like, and enjoy!

And post pics of what you get. !
