I just got my QC pics for my Explorer 1 Ref.214270 904L SS/SS Blk BPF Asia 3132. Do you think the cross in the Mercedes hour hand is a little thick? It seems narrower in other QC pictures and gen. Thoughts?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you in advance.

I don't believe you are allowed to post QC pics on the forum.

The point of QC pics is to check it's not missing a number or a hand has fallen off or the datewheel is in mandarin - the sort of minutiae you are raising is not a reason for rejection, AFAIK.

Thank you for the feedback. I will GL the watch.

Apparently the Exp1 39mm are not super-accurate but I don't care - I think they look great :) so wear it and enjoy it!

FWIW this is a good pic of a Gen, and it looks identical to your hands IMO :)

Is there any quality difference between the 316L 2836 version vs the 904L 2824 version? I’m about to pull the trigger. They are about $100 apart in price. I don’t care about the steel grade, but which is closer to gen when taking into account crown position and hand positioning?

What do you mean by 'hand positioning'?

You should be able to do some comparisons on crown location by looking for Gen photos and comparing them to the photos in the listings of the reps you are looking at.

Not easily. The stem difference between the movement is .5mm and the hand piñon is also different with the 2824 being at 2.2 and the 2836 being at 2.7, as I understand it.

Are you talking about height from the dial?

I think anyone would be hard pressed to notice 0.5mm from a distance...

Would be interesting to me as well. Would you all go for the 904 version, especially when considering swapping in an ETA 2824?

I went with the 904L version because of the 2824. I have two watches that are the same caliber, and I figure if I ever replace the movement, it’s not a bad idea to have interchangeable movements that I can hopefully learn to get more familiar with. If I didn’t have that as a reason, I would go with the 2836 for the cost savings.

904 steel is a hoax and a bad excuse to bump up the price.

Why do you say this? In your opinion, isn't it possible that the various factories are able to reproduce the quality of steel?

if you had handled both variants, you would basically come to the same conclusion. It could be different, but it certainly looks & feels congruent on every level.
Logically, Chinese factories use the upgrade in steel to be able to demand higher prices

They probably make fine 904L steel. In my opinion, however, 904L steel is not really a lot better than 316L for most uses. Maybe in theory it's bit more resistant to chlorinated water but It's mainly a business stunt introduced by Rolex. It's not like 316L steel has a reputation of corroding if you take it for a swim. In any case 904L steel isn't more expensive as far as I know or at least no where near something that would warrant a $100 raise in the price. Just my two cents of course.

Lovely mate, congrats!

I'm about to pull the trigger and I'd kindly ask for a definitive answer - does the 904L watch look in any way different than the 316L? Has anyone held them side by side? I have an option of getting the 316L version and it's 60$ less, which to me is not that terribly cheaper. Is 904L brighter, whiter, more shiny, anything? Or do you guys think it's a marketing ploy? I couldn't care less for more corrosion resistance, as my watches ( rep or gen ) never go anywhere near water. Plus I'm rotating my collection, so I wear a certain watch maybe 3 times a month.
I'm not a lazy f@#k asking to be spoon fed, I've read the thread twice and I'm still not absolutely sure what to think.
