Actually, diameter is merely one parameter of watch sizing. Granted it's the most commonly used one but diameter will only tell you so much about the size of a watch if you don't take into account thickness, lug to lug...The size, according to how it is offcially measured, is always the diameter of the case, lugs are of no relevance there. You may however view the lugs as a kind of "size" of course. Others may additionally add the first link etc etc.
Personally I don't agree though.
Saying that lugs are of no relevance is like saying that weight or torso/waist measurements is of no relevance when determining a person's size since the "official" measurement is height. Like the diameter of a watch, height will only tell you one part of the story... Not all 185 cm persons are the same size. Similarly, not all 41mm watches are the same size.
