Cost cutting and raising the price? I thought they would preserve some essence and characteristics. But no.
Also doesn’t help that 80s and 90s APs look like pure now. Like if you wore one, people would think they were bad fakes. It’s not meant to be passed on if the QC on them looks clownish.
I like the vintage and young timer APs. I honestly don’t think they are that bad. My 14790st Mark I is really good and comparable to the latest models in terms of quality I feel. It has enough power reserve for my needs and keeps time fantastic. But yes, I didn’t buy the 4100st because I heard it had a more brittle movement. But later on have met several persons who daily their 4100st.
My perpetual calendar is also from the early 1990’s and it’s amazing in terms of finishing and quality. I dailied it for almost a half year during the honeymoon period. Kept time perfectly, and that was even before it was serviced. I got it serviced after I accidentally dropped it at a party :/
I think AP had great quality during those decades. They don’t look like bad fakes. I get more compliments on my 14790st from non watch and watch persons than any other watch I wear.
But i am no AP expert at all. This is entirely anecdotal from a little sample of personal experiences and your opinion would be as good as mine.
