I keep seeing a lot of responses to questions from new members that basically state, "Its rude to just jump in and ask questions without introducing yourself first." Where did that come from? When did Hints from Heloise become a member? I must have missed the class on web decorum.

We should be glad any new member ever speaks around here. Asking questions is a bear trap for most of these guys. If you are new, and you have a legit question after reading and doing a little searching yourself, post up that thread. Its like we are making this place a country club and you have to wear a collared shirt and khakis to get in.

Shutup noob.

:p

I agree. I've seen those replies before and have no idea what even prompts them. On the other hand, there are usually a handful of friendly replies that give helpful info and links to faqs and subforums.

I think that the sort of reply you're describing is unwarranted as a first reply, but does have a place if the OP ignores the helpful posts and asks to be spoonfed. After 5 helpful replies and the OP still asking, I'd probably reply with a "Go read it yourself you noob" sort of post.

I have seen a lot more of that recently, things were a little different when I joined over a year ago.

Here is a link to my first post, same sort of questions that a lot of new members ask, I got great replies and was made to feel welcome on the forum.

http://forum.replica-watch.info/vb/showthread.php/rolex-submariner-16610-101600?t=101600

I doubt some of the new members are made to feel as welcome as I was, considering some of the replies I have seen.

Your first thread is a perfect example of what most of us would do when being on a forum for the first time. But honestly, is that what you are seeing on all these forums today ? It's not just here.

You don't go into someone's house for the first time, and start telling them how their furniture should be arranged. You don't walk in and tell them that you don't like their floors, their curtains etc.

That is what is going on now. It's also not just harmless threads. It's a " give me give me give me " attitude that affects us all, because it affects the dealers we do business with. Paypal issues have even affected this site. Dealers are having to spend more time now dealing with knuckleheads who feel they are entitled to be treated like royalty purchasing a $1 Million dollar diamond. There are incidents that have taken place with dealers and other members, that have not been posted on the forum. But I can tell you that amongst many of us, people are reluctnat to even sell a watch publicly anymore.

An Intro thread won't solve any of thses issues. But knowing how to behave when you are new, in any situation goes a long way.

In all fairness, i think how a new member is treated depends on the types of questions they ask.

Some newbie questions are considered "fair territory" while others seem not to be.

My guess is that any questions making suggestions on how to improve the process or questions that can be easily gleaned from the excellent guide resources on this site open the newbies up to being "flamed". Fair enough, but flaming can be done in a respectful way I would argue. Others would disagree though.

Thank You thedoover

I'm relatively new to this forum, so when I made first post some snot-nosed self-appointed Miss Manners from so-cal scolds me for not having first formally introduced myself. Luckily, I had spent some degree of time reading posts beforehand, so I knew most of the people involved in this forum were good guys. If I hadn't, I would have thought I had happened upon a pack of candy-assed weasels.

Ok, so far in this thread there are two established problems that need solutions, maybe. I mean the status quo isnt killing anyone, but here's what I see.

1. New members frequently are directly or indirectly discouraged from posting. I know that on the surface, the discouragement is meant to prevent inane, or easily researched questions and answers;

2. In order for this forum to continue running like many long time members, myself included, would like it to run, and for its members to abide by generally accepted standards of behavior that seem to be the de facto guide to decorum here, there is a desire to instruct new members on what that expected decorum is. (By run, I just mean that each forum, and each replica watch forum, has its own personality and it is desired that RWI keep its own. Running has nothing to do with the work the mods and admins here do, as we all would agree they are excellent at their jobs.)

I dont have an answer - just rephrasing the questions as I see them. Boils down to encouragement and education.

Now I've offended another member from so-cal? Jeez, I hope I haven't spoken too soon. I just sent off $762 to daz8161 for a big crown sub.

Those introduction threads are pretty much useless if you ask me, I don't care for them, they don't help the forum much and from their view count nobody reads them anyway.
Why a user with 5 posts doesn't get asked to introduce himself when he asks a question if this first 4 posts were just comments 5 minutes ago in other threads? I never introduced myself, why don't I get asked to do introduce myself when I ask something?
I think the Internet has a different set of rules, there are billions of people using it, asking each other questions, getting answers, answers get mapped by search engines building this immense database of random information. What would happen if everyone on the Internet has to introduce himself every time before asking something?
I personally don't care to know each one of the 60.000 members of this site before talking to them.
