notice to all: the 3285 clone movement does not fit into the cases for the 3185. The case must be enlarged slightly with the lathe
I think DD3285 for the Dandong makes sense, but why not keeping that convention and naming the Shanghai one the sh3285 ?A few pics of the Dandong 3285.
I’ve seen this called the DD3285 on WeChat to differentiate it from the other new 3285 from the “new” Shanghai movement factory that’s based on the vr3235 movement.
How do people feel about that as a naming convention:
- DD3285 for the 3285 movement that’s made by the Dandong movement factory and is based on the vs3235 which we are now seeing in Clean Factory GMTs. Easily identifiable by regulation and beat adjustor arms facing outwards.
- VR3285 for the 3285 movement made by the “new” Shanghai movement factory and which is based on the vr3235 movement, and which we’ve seen in the new C+ factory GMTs. This movement is easily identifiable by the fake hairspring stud facing outwards and the regulator and beat adjustor arms facing inwards.
The DD3285:
My reasoning for not suggesting SH3285 was because there is the SH3186 movement which has a bad reputation, so I didn't want to preemptively tarnish the 3285 from "new" Shanghai movement factory. Although in general I agree that naming movements after the movement factory rather than the watch factory is a good idea.I think DD3285 for the Dandong makes sense, but why not keeping that convention and naming the Shanghai one the sh3285 ?
I mean either it's vs3285 / vr 3285, or it's dd3285 and sh3285, but mixing the nomenclatures is a bit confusing imo
This is a “new” Shanghai 3285 aka a vr3285. It’s easy to tell from the fake hairspring stud on the balance bridge.
Thank you ;-) obviously we still don't know which of the two 3285 is better right?Questo è un "nuovo" Shanghai 3285 noto anche come vr3285. È facile dirlo dal finto perno a spirale sul ponte del bilanciere.
i believe it’s universally agreed that the Dandong movements are the best. The quality of manufacturing is superior with better fit and finish and amplitude. That‘s why there’s a lot of excitement with the new Dandong 3285 release. There are lots of VR movements out there that are running well though. No clone is perfect, but the DD movements get closer than most.Thank you ;-) obviously we still don't know which of the two 3285 is better right?

There is no “old” vr3285… there was only a vr3186 that was engraved with “3285” but it was obviously still a 31xx design since its rotor didn’t run on bearings.Sorry, i think i was not clear!
The ‘new’ Shangai 3285 it’s better than The ‘Old’ vr3285??
Based on track record - and being that both sh and DD 3285 are new.Sorry, i think i was not clear!
The ‘new’ Shangai 3285 it’s better than The ‘Old’ vr3285??
Sigh… hope springs eternal.Probably wishful thinking that clean issues an explorer 2 with the DD3285, right...? (Hope dies last)
Yes, it's about time we grow up and start using these as proper names for the movements. It makes much more sense, especially seeing how these movements are crossing over into different factories.I think the naming conventions should be
DD3285
SH3285
We should inform TDs then. If I'm not mistaken ctime lists them as CF3285...I think the naming conventions should be
DD3285
SH3285
This is how CTime has referred to the SH version in their teardown comparison.
The VR GMT movements were so named because they first appeared in VRF GMTs, and the factory was purportedly involved in the development and release. There has been no such VRF involvement with the SH3285 that we've heard about.
