Thanks for the responses, wizard and BOUDART. I know neither of you asked me to remove it. However, as a staff member I feel obligated to make the members' experience here as positive as it can be. I appreciate that neither of you are offended to the point of complaining by my old avatar, but that doesn't mean none of our membership is.

I'm happy to change it - it's not a big deal to me.

Well, to me, censorship denotes something that is done against my will or wishes. In this case (as well as CBR's case, honestly), I changed my avatar willingly. Again, my old Big Lebowski avatar wasn't some sort of personal banner, it's just a movie I like. One of hundreds of movies I like. So, I'm glad to change it, even if just for the *chance* that it has made anyone uncomfortable in the past or could in the future.

So, I don't see it as censorship at all.

Does that mean I should change my avatar as well? I mean... drumming is, afterall, an overtly violent hobby. :rimshot::rimshot::rimshot::rimshot::rimshot:

Whatever happened to JVD45?

He was a fellow Londoner who joined about the same time as me and quickly rose to the rank of moderator. He also created some beautiful signatures for some of the members. Then he just as quickly disappeared!

I really enjoy pictures of leathal pills, I have one of a cyanide pill, anyone wanna see that?? ha ha, no I just don't get it, the whole gun issue came outta nowhere.. when hooli was asked if he was a violent person. well he wasn't! he said.
U.S. dudes, I really dont get offended by guns, but on the other hand guns certainly dont get me more pumpin' than a corn pipe or a harmonica, it's just a thing..?? but I have to state, that a helluva lotta folks don't get what's with me and watches?? I realistically could imagine, that if I had grown up in the U.S, I would have possibly had a different view on guns, as something, an item, of leisure interesst. being raised in denmark, just by coincidence caused me to read porn mags from AGE 8. point is, the divercity on here is the thing that besides the watch thing, intreagues me to have a chat with members here!
apart from the whole gun topic, I wanna ask hooli, the only other obvious question, well are you john goodman then?? cause thats what I always thought! :)
question number 2 is : why haven't I seen a post from d4m since the outage, I thought he stayed and LOS left?? perhaps just for his (d4m) private issues, if so, forget that i asked, but I'm just qurious if hes still king on the castle?
ps, my spelling is near perfect, I'm only 4 yrs. old ;)

The US and Guns

Think about the myth we have of the Old West and how many Western movies have been made. What is the attraction? Do we like to spend hours watching cows and horses? No. Hours watching grimy, sweaty, dusty men? No. What attracts us to Western movies is watching one good man stand up against many bad men (often lead by a seemingly very powerful bad man) and yet the good man prevails. In the Old West you could not call 911 or the Police every time the bad guys were doing something wrong to you or your family. What tool existed by which you obtained meat to feed your family and also could be used to protect them from the "bad guys?" You got it right: obviously, the gun. As had been said: God created man but Sam Colt made all men equal. How many Western movies can you think of where the good guy prevailed over the bad guy without using a gun? Europe did not have an Old West. No similar "Old Europe myth." The Wild West was a uniquely American experience to my knowledge.

Today Americans have transplanted this Old West myth to modern times. How can you protect yourself and your family against the "bad guys" who can break into your house at night? Well, you can dial 911 and patiently wait 10 or 20 minutes until the police show up. And what is going to happen in those 10 or 20 minutes while you wait? Will the bad guys take a seat and wait with you? No, they are going to rape a woman, steal what they and and maybe kill you and then leave before the police arrive. A lot of damage can be done in 10 to 15 minutes and when the police arrive they have a siren blaring which only serves to warn the criminal to run out the back door while the police are still a block away. What tool can you have today to protect yourself during those 10 to 20 minutes? Only a gun lets to defend yourself from a distance so that you have the least risk of being hurt yourself. Hence, the Old West gun as a way to defeat the bad guy who is trying to steal your ranch has become the modern urban lifesaver for the 10 to 20 minutes you are going to have to wait for the police to arrive. In the US guns aren't seen as tools of offensive violence. They are seen as defensive tools to stop offensive violence.

D4M decided that for many reasons including his health that it was time he took a step back from RWI. I am now the chief admin officer and R2D4 is my right hand man. RWI continues as before with much the same admin team in place.

So what about JVD45? Or is it top secret?

Not really... my understanding is that he had some issues (of a family nature, I think) that kept him away... we got in touch with him by phone to check that he was ok, and he was. He said he'd be back on the forum soon. But we hasn't been here since. I can only guess that those issues weren't resolved as quickly as he'd hoped. Hopefully he'll be back again one day.

Why are dealers allowed to advertise reps as "Swiss" or "1:1 copy" when both claims are obviously wrong? Same with all of these different names for mineral glass.

As far as "swiss", you cant' say it's obviuosly wrong. It's just difficult to discern a swiss form an Asian copy. Some dealers are also going by what the "factory" is telling them because it is difficult to tell. 1:1 can be construed as advertising fluff. We all know if it is 1:1 then it would be genuine....wouldn't it?

I understand your point, but AFAIK one of the main purposes of a bulletin board like this is to be one honest place in a world of rep scams. Allowing dealers to make, at best, dubious claims is not helping anyone and certainly not newcomers.

Edit: There are in fact 1:1 copies, but maybe not when it comes to watches (and it doesn't make them genuine). I used to work for a car manufacturer and we found copies of parts that were so good we had resort to metallurgy to tell them from our own.

You have good points. You are also armed with knowledge that not everyone possesses. Knowledge gathered from research on this board and possibly others.....where I obtained my knowledge as well. As far as newcomers.......we see many posts encouraging folks to do research and obtain knowledge....there is a reason for that. It encourages people to make an educated purchase.

If you feel a dealer is making dubious claims, RWI is a good place to discuss that. The Admins will respond appropriatley. Also, buy from the dealers you think will give you a good and fair deal. That's what I do.
