kimber all the way.
i would suggest a kimber stainless 45acp.

pros
kimbers are excellent auto pistols. you can't get a better self defence round than the 45acp. untill you get into magnum loads anyway. a minor investment in pistol smithing turned one of my kimbers into the most accurate handgun i have ever seen. period. we are talking one hole 7 round groups at 25 yards standing.
the 1911 design is tried and true. parts are plentiful and most servicing can be done yourself. the thing about a 1911 is that they can be upgraded or changed as you needs evolve. you can turn a inexpensive pistol bought for self defence into a fine target pistol for a small investment. kimber even offers a .22lr conversion kit that turns your combat arm into a very accurate and fun plinking or target pistol. there is even a carbine conversion available.

they offer a frame with a picitinny rail in front to mount a light/laser and you can even purchase laser grips for them.
the .45 is an easy shooting round. i often teach slightly built girls with small hands to shoot very well with it. it is not too intimidating of a recoil.
the slow heavy projectile is capable of outstanding accuracy. the .45 is a first choice among many combat target shooters.
i have carried a 1911 for over 20 years now. starting with my military service. i feel it is a fantastic design. redundant safty systems, amazing accuracy. and a true man stopper. i have had occasion to witness a man who had been shot center mass by 4 9mm rounds return fire from the ground and kill his assailant instantly with a single .45acp round center mass.
you can add tritium vial sights for the best "lume" on a handgun
inexpensive ammunition is redaily available.
a 1911 is very customizable. grips, sights, barrels, muzzle brakes. there are probably more accesories available for the 1911 than any other handgun.
a 1911 is an established and accepted design. one thing to consider , if you are ever unfortinate enough to have to use it to take someones life, the 1911, due to its long military service and vast use as a target pistol does not carry the stigma of being a...how do you say...gangsta gun. this can make a very real difference to a jury. especially in california.
it will outlast you and your sons sons. a stainless frame kimber might as well be indestructable.
cons.
low magizine capacity. 7-8 rounds max in full frame. 6 in officers/ conceled carry.
weight. heavier than plastic framed pistiols. though this can increase accuracy so not always a con.
cost. a kimber is a high end pistol. will cost a bit more than a off the shelf 1911 clone.
no armor penetration to speak of.
hope this is of some help.
p.s a stainless handgun will match your watch. a parkerized one will match your pvd watch
