The fact that you have to consider a gun purchase for reasons of protection and safety, is a editorial comment by definition and I hold sympathy for your unfortunate situation.
Well, I said I was out of the debate, and Enzo nailed it so I don't need to be dragged back in.

DO NOT BUY A HAND GUN UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO KILL SOMEONE.
A handgun will be used against you if you don't use it first. A handgun IS NOT a deterrant.
As in the use of mace or pepper spray, it will not deter anyone that is intent on doing you harm. Use the pepper spray on the maniac and tnen throw it away and run as it will not deter someone who is intent on doing you harm.
Don't believe what you see in the movies as in "stick em up". The person wanting to do you harm will see the fear in your hesitation and stick the handgun up your ass and pull the trigger.

Thank-you Guys..

Well I just got home and I can't beleive all of knowledge and recommendations. I am printing off parts of this thread to study and become more informed on the various makes and models....Like I said my last gun was a S and W 357 that I owned in the late 70"s...So I will reaquaint myself with pros and cons of all the aspects of size and weight, etc. I do want to conceal it so something that it not too bulky...

I value all of your opinions and now that i know who the real expert gun owners are here I will PM you if you don't mind if I have any questions...I know a thread like this can ruffle some feathers but happily it has been very civil... :) I never rush into things like this but you all have given me a great starting point...many thanks....

oh I almost forgot, I do have a gun that belonged to my great-grandfather. I'll try and post a pic later...I looked it up years ago in a gun book and I think it's called a Belgian pinfire, made in late 1800's............

OK thanks. :)

@pug, we're cool. I respect you as a person and your views. Perhaps I got a tad bit carried away with my use of caps, there. That was not my intention. Anyway, a pie and a pint of bitters (can you get that in France?) is on me when we meet, mon ami.
I'm moving to Scotland in a month. They have everything there.

Here is my everyday carry, cant beat a 45 and its concealable and can be be purchased for <$500. I understand the thoughts about about civilians not being able to own guns, but does that stop any violence. The only people that abide by the laws are good people not criminals and who uses the guns for crimes.....criminals. In this culture (US) gun control does not work.

I can make this really simple for you. Get a sub-compact Springfield XD9 or XD40. I bought one a couple of weeks ago to use as my new carry piece. Hands down, it is the best small frame automatic I have ever owned. I have had several Glocks in the past and this gun kicks their ass. It is simply better engineered and more comfortable.

By the way, I’m sorry if I missed it, but what state are you in?

..as Chicken Manny stated I am in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia... :) you know, land of the terminator.... Thanks for the all the info..

Check out a Taurus 9mm small frame auto. Very reliable gun manuifacturer, inexpensive; less than $500 and will hold 6 rounds which is enough to scare the bejezzus out of anybody. You do not need anymore then that. If you want something smaller look at the AMT Back-up .380 auto . One of the smallest medium power autos you can find. Hold 5 rounds in the clip and also very reliable, Less then $400.00. Carried one myself for 4 years. Lots of law enforcement carry this as a backup weapon.

...the price sure is right on the Taurus...So they do testing, firing many rounds to see which gun falters the least? I suppose if Calif. police use them they must be reliable...Without stating the obvious I think reliablity is important...thanks for all the help rw I now will put everyting into the hopper... :)

@cybee, I'm not going to enter the political debate nor recommend any type of weapon as you have had enough recommendations to consider. But, I am going to respectfully request that if you do decide to go down this road that you get the training that others have suggested. In addition to the training, please PLEASE purchase a safe that is securely mounted, to store your weapon. You don't want to contribute to all the illegally used handguns that are on the streets because of a burglary and you don't want an intruder using your own weapon against you. A gun is a tool, but by its nature it can be a very dangerous one, and as such ownership comes with a great deal of responsibility. Unfortunately too many people who aren't responsible own guns.

Wes Anderson on last nights Oscars did a commecrcial for AMEX and asked his 'people' for a 357 with a bayonet attatched. I was trying to find a photo of it but could not, anyway it looked ridiculous and quite funny. Reminds me of Steven Segals latest movie "Kill Them Till They Are Dead".

Yee Gods, the way some of you talk is like there is a shootout in every neighborhood on a daily basis in the U.S.. What a bunch of overblown poppycock. There are over 300 million people in this country and the ability to own a gun is getting harder and harder every year. Beyond criminals, gang bangers and drug dealers the rest of the population acts very responsibly with respect to gun ownership. I own guns, but having lived in a lot of different areas of California from the south to the north, I do not have any friends or aquaintances that are gun owners or do I know of anybody ever in my lifetime that has shot anybody. The fact that you cannot own guns beyond a shotgun in various parts of Europe is a function of a very different history and set of circumstances than we have here in the U.S.. And gross generalizations just don't cut the mustard. And there are always more then 2 types of people in any situation.
Drink more wine!

I must say, that I am mazed at how many members here carry or used to carry handguns.

Surely not all of you were in law enforcement.

Can anyone tell me why they need to carry them day to day?

I do not doubt that it is your right, I respect that and I know that is part of the US constitution, but why the need to carry a firearm as a civilian?

This is my daily carry firearm, small compact and you do not have to worry about a safety just point and shoot, when in doubt I tend to abide by the KISS method
Ruger SP 101
