Hi guys, just wanted to share with you some interesting knowledge about the Chinese and Rolex. As you all know, the Chinese are one of the most superstitious people in this planet , I as a Chinese myself was often very aware and careful with picking numbers. Numbering is a very important aspect in the Chinese culture as some numbers represent good luck, prosperity and some signifies death. Being the number 8 representing Fortune. And number 4, pronounced as "si" ? , sounding like death. Most wealthy Chinese pays a huge sum for beautiful numbers especially for their license plate.

Before I got into watches, I never really notice or cared about the hype between the typical Chinese businessman and their Rolex. All we knew was that wearing a Rolex on your wrist means that you are successful and that you have "made it". Every uncle (this is what we address someone elder than us regardless of whether we are related or not), or grandpa will have a Rolex on their wrist.

That's when I opened my eyes to the world of watches and learned more about them, I started to become more observant of my surroundings. Then that is when I notice a strong similarity among this uncles and elders, most of them wore the Two toned date just or day dates. One day I was sitting in a restaurant for lunch, immediately I spotted 3 half gold datejust, worn by 3 different person sitting in different tables. This really amazed me and I thought that there is something special with this model. And so I went back home to research.

The half gold datejust, or known by their reference number - 16233 is very popular among the Chinese elders. When loosely translated into Cantonese, 16233 can easily mean "all the way easy long life", where 1-One ?, 6-Road ?, 2-Easy ?, 3- life ?.

The next popular model is the full gold day date - 18238. Loosely translated as "prosper easily, long life and prosperity" 1-one?, 8-Prosperity ?, 2- Easy ?, 3- Life ? 8- Prosperity ?.

So next time, when you're in the region or in any Chinese coffee shops, take a look around and maybe you will spot a few of these "Auspicious" watches!

Have a great weekend guys! Cheers!

4, pronounced as "Shi", sounding like death.

Correction - death is pronounced as "si" with a third tone and the number 4 is pronounced as "si" with a forth tone.

Thanks for the info about the dayjust and daydate, I see a lot of those on elderly people too, now I know why =)

Very interesting ! Thanks for sharing this.

I confirm about "4", which is a bad number. I went in China, and saw that very often when you go in a building and take the elevator, there is no 4th floor.

Its pretty hard to tell! But other than the Sub, they are the most sought after replica Rolex model. Hehe

Good info, very interesting totally opposite of a status symbol

Well, it is still a status of symbol among the Asian men, something like owning a Mercedes Benz. Its just that out of all the models, they prefer this two due to the auspicious numberings. Lol!

Very interesting ! Thanks for sharing this.

Yes, even in some Asian countries like Malaysia, Singapore or Chinese owned casinos they replace the 4th floor with the number 3B.. LOL

Bruce Lee obviously did not wear the correct model.
