Haha!! Maybe you can tell us what is the reference number of the "gaytona" and we might try to translate it. Lol!

Lol!
The reference number for the gaytona is "116598 SACO"

Now let's see what that number brings (hoping its not obscene, that is...) Hahahaha

Cheers,
Spirit.

Hey, joshchin!

THANKS for the quick lesson and glimpse into your cultural life; I found it very fascinating. I've spent time visiting in the People's Republic, studying and traveling, and have been a student of China for a while. You just added more! Thanks, mate!

I'm trying to figure out the "6" in the 116598. However. In my opinion is not that of a nice number lol. 1 can be pronounced at "yat" which in this case I perceive it at ?, day in cantonese, 5 as ?- Not, 9 as ?- Enough, 8 as ?- Prosper. So as a whole. ??6(?)???. Meaning, Everyday 6(?) is not enough to prosper.

Maybe some native cantonese members here could help me out. Lol!!

Nice one josh. Although I didn't think of it that way before, I agree with your post. It's a nice way to think about it.

I'm mostly Chinese too ('tho not full) and numbering plus feng shui are important in many of our business related activities (my plate numbers? 888 and 01 among others hahaha).

My take on the matter is that many of the businessmen I know buy Rolexes that:

1) are pure SS or a 2-tone to mix the metal feng shui. Surprisingly, very few males that I know of have a sold gold Rolex. The ones that I know who have one are not millionaires. They are the multi-millionaires... or big time gamblers.

2) have light colored dials. Only the younger ones (35 and below) buy black faced Rolexes for their first Rolex. If ever they will buy a black dial, they will mix it with other predominant colors to mix the metal:

Of course, this does not always apply, especially for mixed or hybrid Chinese (like hapless me) who just get what they just want.

Enjoy mate! :)

Thanks boss, actually, I am a hybrid myself as well. Haha! I'm half Chinese, half Filipino. In fact, my family does not really practice or believe much in Feng Shui. But hey, its in the culture right!? Hahaha.. Nice license plate, 888 is very expensive. Some people even go to great lengths to purchase cellular phone numbers with auspicious numberings as well!.

1. Yes, Actually, up until now I have only spotted one full gold Day Date once, I usually see half gold datejust usually. And yes, many big gamblers like that watch, just check out your casinos and you might spot a few. Thanks for the info, I was not aware of mixing metals in the feng shui elements.

2.Well, I agree with you, my first rep, which is a Sub was black faced. Hopefully, I will be able to purchase a gen after I work, Which I foresee will be a black faced dial as well lol! Its true that most youngsters nowadays just buy the watch they like, you will seldom see them wearing the half gold or full gold watches, they always say it makes you look like an "Uncle" LOL!

Thanks for the info Glenn! I was thinking of "Lou" as well. But being a non-cantonese speaker, I was not very sure! Hahaha! "Working hard everyday but I'll not be able to get rich!"

wow, that was quite interesting lol Ill be on the lookout for this now rofl

I hope this wasn't one of the watches in your wish list?! Hahaha!

I use to have a gen Datejust just like the one in your post.
It was a nice watch and one that I wore with my suits.
I bought it when I didn't know anything about watches or reps for that matter.
At that time, early to mid 90's, this watch was the most common Rolex around or so it seemed. As far as your number theory, I'm not sure if people that buy these Rolexes even know or cared about the model numbers. I sure the hell didn't care and most people buy watches as status symbol more than anything.
Only us watch freaks take every detail into account.

Haha. Of course as what you said. Not many of them are aware of the reference number in the watches. Maybe the two tone date just became so popular that once a common man wanted a watch. It has got to be the that date just. Its like a trend.

Very interesting post - I enjoyed it

I do business in China and visit a couple of times a year. Mostly HK, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Nanjing. Do business with a number of consumer electronics factories. I never thought that model numbers had anything to do with it. I have noticed that many of the upper managers have TT Rolexes. The big boss typically has a TT or a gold DD. Some of the big bosses have several. Some of the younger guys have subs, GMTs etc. I do see the occasional Omega but mostly Rolex - ALL ARE GENS - unless they are super duper reps and I can't tell. Even among the guys who are in the epicenter of reps - Guangzhou.

Yes sofacleez. Gen rolexes are big in China. In fact, pretty big, as the vast domestic market can consume both gens and reps easily. As you have been in Shanghai, you may have checked out that there are 4 'effin gen Rolexes stores in the short Bund street alone! Crazy.
