chrome72 for the lume I have an disrespectful idea if you don’t have manual skill (like me) .. in my kuvarsit 6542 the lume seem a fabbric velor cut with hollow cutter and than glued on the plot indices.

That's really quite a good resolution for a laser printer. I'd like to know the model and brand just for reference.

Thanks!

Thanks! The printer I am using is a Toshiba 2505AC, which was a huge upgrade over the Canon machine I had before, but each brand might improve their hardware from time to time, so it is never a bad idea to keep an eye out for best performing machines.

Read through pretty much all the tutorials I could find (including the whole of this awesome thread), and decided to try my hand at doing a decal dial for my space-dweller build:

For the dial, I used 28.5mm ETA dial blanks from Ofrei, and then I used Sunnyscopa inkjet decal paper from Amazon. My printer is a Canon Pixma Pro-100 which I use for photo prints, so it’s able to do quite high quality decals - definitely surprised me at how crisp it was once it was applied.

To prep the dial, I soaked it in acetone to remove the old paint, and then sanded from 400-1200 grit to smooth off and sealed the brass with clear coat. I then hit the dials with a few layers of gold spray paint, and let that dry fully before applying the decal.

The decal designs I did in illustrator, which I then exported as 2400dpi PNGs and dragged into a US letter sized document in photoshop also at 2400 DPI. I did a few dial sizes—the dial blanks are at 28.5mm so I did a row sized 28.1mm and one sized 28.3mm, which was the one I applied to the dial:

After printing out the decal sheets, I let the ink dry overnight before hitting it with 4-5 layers of matte clear coat, which I remember reading about on here or RWG as a good way to prevent the ink from running.

To get the white print for the “Space-Dweller” text, I applied a tiny amount of white acrylic paint (I used some hi-flow paint that I had left over, but as long as the layer isn’t too textured it will work). I got really lucky with the paint placement to be honest; it could be a hair higher so the 3’o clock marker would be aligned with the notch.

The print quality really surprised me—with a loupe examination (pictured) the print is super sharp and definitely holds up. I think adding the gold spray paint at the back also makes the dial more attractive overall.

Now to do some gloss clear coat and add lume—it’ll be my first time doing lume so gotta get in some practice first.

Other dial designs on the same sheet:

Thank you! I think the sharpness is really a function of the printer more than using illustrator, although doing the designs as a vector is a much easier process than using the 1px brush in Photoshop.

I’m having some trouble with adhesion though-it seems like I may have applied the gloss spray a little too quickly after applying the decal, so it’s starting to peel off. I should wait for it to dry at least 24 hours before spraying, right?

Thank you haha - definitely not as impressive as it sounds, it’s just a very thin brush and a tiny layer on the underside where the white text is supposed to be:

The line I drew on the picture above was wrong - a little high, so I peeled it off with my fingernails and tried again:

There’s a little bump because the paint layer wasn’t totally flat, but it came out pretty okay! Red depth next, I think.
