Why does everyone say "mate"?

Just curious. A funny little observation I notice more as I spend way too much time here.

Feels like everyone I talk to is somewhere in Europe. But even when I talk with CONUS members, "mate" is throw around quite a bit.

Is it just a thing we do here?

not sure if you're kidding or not... but that is a good idea. Ive always wondered, if I spot a potential rep in the wild, how can I compliment the guy, while letting him know Im a fellow Repper... but then if its Gen, he wont get it.


BTW, hard to imagine a Socal guy saying "mate".

Funny thing is that most non-native english speakers (like me) "learned" it here, a sort of a custom. So why, really?

Calling everyone "my friend", thats sort of an "asian" habbit...
