The cheapest Nikon DSLR now is the D3100. I have a Nikon D80 and a D90 and a D7000 (all three mid-level Nikons) and just received a Nikon D3100 today. So far I am amazed at the quality image the D3100 can produce. As I experiment around with it more I will report on what it can do. So far it seems to me the sensor resolution will be superior to the sensor in the Nikon D80 which is the camera I used to take most of the photos I published in my RWI posts. It seems to me you can take the same quality image now with a camera costing half as much as the ones I have used in the past. So if you are looking for a digital SLR check out that Nikon D3100 before you buy anything.
I too have a D80, great camera! I bought a used D5100 a couple months ago... I LOVE IT! Easy for people to shoot in the "auto" modes and great adaptability to shoot in manual mode! I have both Nikor 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses.
