Just wondering - seeing this phrase from time to time... think it's a watch that sorta looks like another, much more expensive watch, but without actually trying to 'replicate' the watch... Correct?

Exactly right. A watch that looks just like a Submariner or a Panerai 111 without actually saying "Rolex" or "Panerai" anywhere on the watch. That's an homage watch.

Are homages considered the same category as replicas in the eyes of a manufacturer?

I forgot about that! A buddy of mine has one of those, apparently the value is rising on them.

A homage watch is a watch made of Swiss cheese. Oh wait... I think I'm confusing it with a fromage watch.

We used to have some hilarious discussions about the Homage guys back on the old RWG.

What were some of the jokes about the homage guys?

Fakey - I tear my hair out trying to figure out your sig :)

"People will assume your gen is a fake before they presume your fake is a gen...if they care at all."

Are you saying that people are more likely to think a gen is fake, or that a fake is a gen?

Essentially that your gen is a fake. But the meaning actually is much deeper than that.

Example...

People will assume your homage is a gen until they presume you bought it at Wal-Mart...if they care at all.

That's because Panerai managed to trademark the CG shape. Rolex wouldn't have any grounds to go after any of the Sub homages out there, since they don't violate any patents/trademarks. Not so with reps...

An homage watch is pretentious.
It's quite ok to say a homage watch.
