- Remove the bezelinsert is an absolute must because you will need to press the bezel back on during assembling

i not good at english but i dont understan why you have to remove insert from bezel?

Ceramic inserts are quite brittle and can easily crack if pressure is applied unevenly. It's happened to many members. Press the bezel on, then re-attach the insert.

thank you from what i understand that gasket not attach directly with xtal,
1.It seem possible to remove just only xtal and used old gasket so i dont have to worry about ceramic part ?

2.why rolex package contain 2 gaskets when we gonna used only 1?

You have to remove the bezel assy first. After that you can take off the retention ring. After that take out the crystal with its gasket. Thats the correct sequence.

There are two whitish delring rings used in this watch. The smaller one holds the bezel assy on the retention ring. Don’t destroy it. Difficult to find a replacement part!
The other white ring is the crystal gasket. It snaps into the groove of the crystal.

If you pry out the crystal from the backside without disassembling the bezel it may work and the whole assy comes off. But I strongly recommend to work like I described above!!!Otherwise the risk destroying parts is very high!

Thanks for that awesome write up!! Where can I get the essential “special die”? Or any specs so I can source one? Thanks Again!

Whats the inner diameter of the special dye or iwc movement holder? 30mm?

It should be exactly what the inner diameter of the crystal retaining ring is, or slightly larger than the outer diameter of the crystal gasket. You can use any metal ring including a thick washer or an old Explorer II bezel for this.task.

The biggest trick for dissembling/assembling the modern Sub lies in removing and attaching the crystal retention ring. Like for the SD43 it is a nightmare to change the crystal.
And you should always use a new crystal gasket whenever possible once you are reinstalling the crystal.

Curious question. If I don't have the special bezel press die, is it still possible to press the crystal gasket, bezel, retaining ring into the case using just a flat plastic die either (size 29,30,31,32mm) that can cover the entire diameter of the retaining ring? Would this not be sufficient to apply even force to press it into place? Or could anyone suggest a different tool/ alternatives method for this step for those like myself who does not have neither the special die nor an old explorer bezel to use. If the issue is the plastic die is too soft and malleable to support the ring when pressed, i assume any hard material that is large enough to cover the diameter of the ring can be used correct? Hope to hear from any members with the experience that the method in question should theoretically work or provide any tips or suggestions are always welcomed.

Sometimes a bezel removal will bring the crystal retaining ring along with it. Even if it doesn't, it can be reassembled that way as shown in the pic below. This is actually the Rolex official right way to remove and reinstall these pieces. But they also use and sell an expensive tool that uses vacuum suction for removal and the right pressure in the right places on replacement. It's possible to reinstall the bezel with hytrel ring and retaining ring in place onto a rep, but I would remove the insert first.

To attempt this, any die that fits into the empty bezel well would work, the bezel will push the retaining ring down. I like to press the retaining ring separately so I can see how it seats and make sure it is down evenly all the way around.

There are differences among reps in how tightly a retaining ring, crystal gasket, and crystal fit on a case so doing this may be easy or may be more difficult but it shouldn't damage any parts as long as the insert is out and the hytrel ring is properly seated below the crystal retaining ring lip.

If you want to try to find something to press the retaining ring first onto the case, take the ring with you to a hardware or big box store and look for a thick washer or piece of PVC pipe with the right inside diameter to catch the ring but miss the crystal. You can press the ring with a small flat board on top of the washer and the case flat on a bench. Or protect the case and use a vise.
