Been looking a few gens available in the market and recent threads have me fearing a rep instead of the genuine article. Might as well buy myself a rep at this rate!!

Anyone got any good tips for spotting the gen without looking at the movement, or is that the only route forward?

Better yet - Anyone got a rep I can buy? :ROFLMAO:

Well.. I went down that path.. I had a BIvintage build me a 79090.. Vietnam case, Vietnam dial..etc..etc overall very nice, but its NOT a franken but MUCH better than the JK or ?? version JKF- cant remember the company...

To spot the gen it should be easy. IMHOP if u compare the GEN DATE WHEEL #5 to a REP #5... To my knowledge there has not been a PERFECT replica DATE WHEEL made for the 79090 with the nice SERIFs that a GEN has... LOOK at a picture of a GEN 79090 date of 5.. The "5" on a GEN DATE wheel has real interesting " SERIFS" around #5 where the corners (4 SERIFs I counted on #5 GEN),

SEE THIS RWI THREAD ON 79090 DW-- though they had a good SOLUTION for REP DW -- the #5 does not look GEN!!

On the 9411 its much easier because the 2784 has a real unique DW ... My 9411 I bought has a gen 2784 and boy its mechancial REFINED!!

So that's my opinion!! If u do go the BIvintage route PUSH HARD FOR them to put a SWISS ETA vs the A28?? .. I was not to happy on how it felt thought it kept great time .. ALso the BIvintage cases do need some mod work so the bezel move free, else its very hard and that has been a common complaint...

Prob cost you about 900$ to order 79090 shipped with a2836 and if they upgrade I am guessing to a SWISS ETA it would be +200...

500$ more you could prob get a perfect Franken 79090 from a modder off RWI..

good luck

Thank you brother.. Its amazing what someone can learn from RWI and Reppgeek.. lots of great members. Plus once u have a franken rep built through a WATCH MODDER and spend 3-5k you learn allot real quick..lol.. Hopefully after 3 builds I have scratched that itch.. funny thing is I still want a gen or 2.. mind games!

The reps are seriously excellent these days, but the magic of gen will never be matched. I never felt that I had wanted the Tudor Sub as much as I do now, but here we are 😂

I think you should enjoy the hunt and wait for a prestine Franken/custom Tudor 79090... I have not seen 79090 but I know modder POMPOM is building a 9411. see his tread.. its NOT the same as a 79090 but I believe they use same case.. If you are trying to get GEN ERA correct as a franken then yea prob better to build your own thru a modder.. but POMPOM thread as some excellent into on 9411 which should align to some extent on a 79090 but I could be wrong

The problem "I SEE" with - vintage TUDOR FRANKENS IMHOP is its so hard to get a GEN DIAL though the Vietnam REP DIALS I heard they are 1:1 so who needs a gen dial right..lol!!
Also the gen 79090 Tudor has a 2824 vs gen 9411 use the 2784.... Many watch experts will tell you "its just a SWISS ETA" but who am I..lol .Prob is but I have both gen 2784 and many SWISS ETA of 2824 (250$ to 300$ ) and the 40yo TUDOR 2784 mechanically feel refined. then AGAIN like you said about GEN stuff giving off that unmatch feeling.. I have to admit though I have had a Asian 2836 serviced by local watchsmith and it performs/feels so much better than coming from factory!!! Still if u gonna build it or shop for a franken/custom 79090 hopefully it has swiss ETA or you can always hunt for a custom built 79090 and buy it for much less than it was built then upgrade it..

I’m familiar with bivintage selling parts on eBay but I did not know they sell built watches. How do you contact them for full builds?

If you have the funds it's really easy to build one, all pretty much plug and play no mods needed.

Here's my build for reference and example.

Ty for sharing the link. Sure seem like a extensive project. I think I could do a hip replacement vs build a 79090. Lol. You build came out awesome but it took some skills... great thread !

I'd keep an eye on for GEN bargains as well... I was offered a 76100 with flaked hand lume and a broken clasp (9315) for £3.2k and good watches on bracelets have sold for £4,250 recently... So, nice, head-only watches can be picked up for <£4k. A bracelet isn't really needed for a T-Sub (Rolex ADs will sell you a brand new 78500 with 380b end links for ~£800), anyone who knows what it is would see a £5 NATO as pretty normal.

Ok, that's a lot more than a REP or even a good franken, and I'm not talking 79090 there (albeit they're not really trading for that much more) but I've seen Tudor Sub frankens sell for £1.5-3k on here in recent times (thinking of the CAC Snowflake, specifically, which again, is not quite like for like) but any GEN T-Sub is worth double a good REP, of any model reference, all day long and worth saving the extra for.

Think the sweet spot for a REP is around the £1k mark nowadays. Viet case, dial, hands, etc. and one of those nice, new 2824s with the gold KIF balance - lovely! Add a GEN dial and insert, maybe a crown/plexi too, and you're suddenly £2k+... too close to a GEN for me. There's a GEN, head-only (service dial) 7928 out there at the moment for ~£4k. However, it's whatever makes you happy and of course a lot of the fun is in the building and getting as close to GEN as possible.

Helpful, thank you. A decent quality rep touching 1k is very differ to getting the gen at a starting point of 4k whilst scratching that itch. It's a hard call really as I've been hunting around for the gen availability and have ended up going down the top end Franken route for now.

Will keep all posted! 😂

I could not agree more. Especially like u said "scratching that itch at 4k" and usually that's for a gen piece that's sub par vs a mechanically sound gen .. thst was my issue with Nipple Dial rlx subs. I tried my best to buy a gen at 10k and they were all beat to crap. They did not resemble a sexy tropical look. Lol. They resembled a vintage rlx thst was in a war or used in tug o war. Lol

GEN is GEN though... You always know! I love the builds on here (and of course have my own) but they're stop-gaps, not substitutes. Beat to shit is my look of choice :D

Maybe that's what I need to do, get a decent Franken (already in the works) and if I love it, gen on the way. You're right, can't beat gen

I agree as well But I can definitely live without a bracelet that has been through a stretch 2inches. Lol. Just my opinion. But yea I can argue fact with a franken it'd always missing the 1 bit of mojo!..

They're not properly vintage as such... They were the last of the T-Sub bracelets, basically a Rolex 93150, like you would get on a 90s Rolex Sub. They're solid not folded link, which is good, but still come with the correct folded end links, which is nice! Clasp is marked with the Tudor shield. I saw someone fit a 93250 with solid end links to a T-Sub once... shudder! I think they're pretty good value from the AD, considering what they go for on ebay, and being brand new, obviously considerably better condition than a rattly old Rolex 93150.

However, you can't beat a date matching bracelet so I do have a folded link 7836 (an option rarely taken) on one of my 9411 GENs, with the matching clasp year.
