Ok, I'm in CONUS and have yet to have the pleasure of partaking in a real Cuban Cigar. My question is to those of you who have access to them...do they live up to the hype? Lets say for instance a Romeo Y Julieta from Cuba how does it compare to a Romeo Y Julieta from the Domincan or Honduras? I'm contemplating making a purchase from cigarsofhabanos.com and just want to make sure its worth the hassle? Thoughts? Also any experience with cigarsofhabanos.com?

It all comes down to personal taste... Cubans tend to be a stronger smoke than most Dominican brands. The overall construction, consistency of the draw etc. is usually excellent with most Cuban brands as well.

There is no relation between the Cuban and Dominican brand names. When the cigar families fled, they took tobacco seed and the brand name with them. But over 60 years later there would be no similarity between, Partagas, Hoyo, Montecristo, etc. that you can buy in Cuba. It's just a name, and logo.

But honestly, many of the the cigar brands made in Dominican Rep. and Central America are of excellent quality as good and sometimes better than Cubans. I travel internationally pretty frequently for work, and I don't bother to buy Cubans anymore. They're just not worth 2 or 3 times the price of a good Dominican. My advice is not to buy into the mystique created by the embargo. Buy a good box of Dominicans and spend the difference on a nice rep!

The biggest issue is that the most talented growers and rollers moved out of Cuba as soon as they could. There is no question that Cuban soil and climate is the best in the world for cigars -- nothing else compares. For the past 20 years, however, the quality has been going south in most Cuban brands. Even worse in the past 10 years. Dominicans are notoriously tight, but have well cured tobaccos. Nicaraguans have more flavorful blends and are rolled more in the Cuban style -- but are not yet to the maturity of other countries. For my money, Pepin Garcia, AJ Fernandez and Drew Estates (T9, T52, Liga Provada -- not the flavored crap) are as good as Cubans for half the price. Now that normalization is underway, I give Cuba 5-10 years before it catches or even surpasses everyone else.

That being said, everyone needs to try a true Cuban -- the taste is like sweet dirt and while it sounds weird, you look for it in every cigar you smoke that isn't Cuban.

Couldnt disagree more that cubans are overrated and overpriced. I live on West Coast and my state tobacco taxes are extremely high. Decent Dominicans or Nicaraguan sticks cost north of $13. I can get great cuban cigars that average $7-$12 each. If you like a smaller smoke, a Bolivar Petite Corona, Partagas Short, or Por Larannaga Petitie Corona costs about $4 each.
Cuban quality did decline in the early 2000, but started to greatly improve in 2011 thru the present. Rich, flavorful, medium to full bodied with the earthy, leathery, spicy flavor one would expect from a real cuban.

I have has some amazing Dominicans and Nicaraguans, but with the high tobacco taxes, they are more expensive then the cubans I get. If I find great non cubans, I have to buy full boxes from out of state to avoid the high taxes.
Buying Fidels best from the right Seller is most important because there are alot of bogus sellers out there. COH is a trusted seller. His prices are great.

For those that enjoy cigars, try a few different cubans, and decide for yourself if they live up to the hype. For me, nothing can match the richness of a good cuban. Many try, some are close, but there truly is something about the soil....

I could never get into Cubans... I like the spicy punch of Nicaraguan and Dominican tobacco. You'll never taste anything like a Padron 45th Anniversary coming out of Cuba. That said, the Cohiba Behikes are pretty special. And I did have a Cohiba grand reserve when my daughter was born.

Box date is Oct 14, fresh. Replacement from the previous guys from Mar 12 that aged nicely. My fav robusta for the buck. Can't go wrong with a Partagas Series D, or MC Edmundo / petit Edmundo either.

Non-Cubans favs are CAO Cameroon, and Padrons (got a couple of pardon anniversary family reserve 85 developing a faint plume for a special occasion in the humidor right now as well). Bauza Pyramids have a nice spice pick them up occasionally.

Padron 45th Anniversary was one of my Top 10 best smokes ever. Very few people ever had an opportunity to taste one of these as they are $25+ per stick. Also the Opus X Red foots are among the strongest cigars I have ever tasted...more spicy than any Cuban I have smoked. I love the Padron Anniversary Pyramids Maduro. So chocolately and spicy. But these smokes are $13+ each or more depending on where you live. Behikes are great but not worth the coin. I prefer a well aged H Upmann Sir Winston anyday.

The Seller I work with sends me a Box Code listing of current inventory when I am ready to place and order. He allows me to pick the the Boxes I choose. If something is out of stock, he gives me other options. Those that enjoy Cubans know that quality and taste vary by production and factory. Having the ability to choose just makes it a little more exciting.

illusione: mk ultra, candela lancero (unlike any candela)
my father: flor de Antilles, picador (Raleigh shop exclusive)
tatuaje: 7th reserva, frank, 2013 broadleaf
liga privada: dirty rat, flying pig, t52
opus x: angel share (best thing they've put out in years)
Fratello: totally unique smokes with Peruvian filler

not really a fan of general stuff, but the new Romeo aging rooms are great

For a reasonably priced smoke, Tatuaje are quite full bodied and and not for the faint of heart. Wasnt able to get any of the Angels Share....Im so jealous. I see you are in Raleigh....I used to buy from McCranies out of Charlotte.

In my opinion, nothing tastes as good as a Cuban Monetcristo #2.

You can't compare the same brands from different locations (Like Cohiba from Cuba or Dominican, or Romeo) as they are different companies, just the same name.

I have found great tasting cigars everywhere. I have had some amazing Jamaican cigars, great Dominican, but nothing is as amazing as a Cuban Monte #2. Again, just my opinion :)
