Thoughts: Is Panerai fading?

Seems that Panerai the brand has started to slip and fade even in the genuine realm. Has anyone else noticed this? Their models are looking cheaper using pins and snap on case backs. They even had a price decrease.

Nooo, why do you think that?! There are some models that aren't for anyone but Panerai is still Panerai. Btw where have you seen they are using pins (except Carbotech) and snap on caseback?

panerai would just reduce production and increase prices if they start "fading".

Cartier and the diamond industry has worked this way for hundreds of years.

I have to say I agree with the OP -- but I'm not sure the cause. Certainly some of the newer ideas like busier dials, the carbotech, and moving to more slimline 40's cases are a shift away from the earlier models. Perhaps there are other reasons like a stagnant economy or the move to all in-house movements, which I'm sure was expensive. Lowering production would be a good idea IMO as well as more attention to detail. There is an overall decline in the luxury watch market across all brands and types -- maybe the iWatch is to blame?

Bottom line is that Panerai does seem stale to me and that's coming from a guy who's had the same breakfast for 15 years.

How many $8,000 watches with $150 ETA 6497 movements can you sell before people get wise?

That's a legitimate point.

But, I think they make beautiful stuff. Classic, easy to dress up or dress down. There's something organic about having gears and springs and ticking and the like and being able to see it through a clear caseback. I'd rather wear a fake 111 than a real Submariner any day. YMMV.

I really love Panerai, but I think I don't want to buy their gen base model if I can buy the reps with asian clone in it, if you wanted to buy gen PAMs, goes with their highend inhouse movt.

Their decisions make the brand look cheap and accessible. Something which should never happen even for an entry level
luxury brand like panerai

I agree with Zeinharis only the in house movements are worth it considering the reps we have (except maybe the 56x line). Obviously the vintage models are worth it - 5218, 6152 ;)

That been said I'm still waiting for the 630 from the factories...

I don't want others to think that I encourage you all not to buy the PAMs base line, after all gen is always better because of the aftersale service, but I'm looking at the price point here. You can get the base PAM let say PAM 111 with an eta movt for $5k vs the reps with an eta clone for let say for $500 (serviced, oiled, regulate, abit of mod) with minor flaws that others won't noticed it, with that kinda situation, I'll choose the reps.

I can't believe this sh*t. Lowering costs by putting springbars and snap on caseback? Wtf? They saved $5 and put away a lot of customers with it. I'm really dissapointed. Even if I could afford one of these models, I wouldn't buy them because of that reason.

Too many new models, too much marketed "limited editions" only to be followed by a similar one, possibly the hype is wearing off a bit.
I love the classics, but imho they try too much too fast and are dissipating the brand image. Objectively they are a "new" brand with barely 20 Years of history. Following 1997 "Richemont´s Panerai" bought all the patents, moved the factory to Switzerland and hired a batallion of good lawyers and marketing strategists but -except sharing the pictures and exploiting the heritage and protecting the patents - they have quite little to do with the original manufacture Orologi da Tasca of Giovanni and Guiseppe Panerai.
Panerai always used external, reliable and easy to service movements, I wonder what the service costs on in-house movements in 10 and 20 years will be, it won´t be cheap or fast for sure.
Strangely after some time with Panerai I also rediscovered my love for slim 36mm and 39mm watches that have been put apart and nearly forgotten.
Still - Paneristis are forever - and You don´t need a loupe to see the time:)
