Well, the Athaya crown is taking its sweet time to get here, so the project is in limbo until then. So close to being done!

@yodog Yep, for the most part. With the dial and hands removed from the movement, I used near-boiling salt-saturated water in a fine misting bottle, to mist the air just above the hands and dial. The rather small to microscopic specks left behind gave it a nice texture, vastly better than the flat look it has stock. The salt stays fused to the matte dial very well, and shouldn't cause any future issues. The look I went for was something similar to these two gen, and mine seems to split the difference.

I also faded the bezel insert to the blue color I really wanted to get in the first place.

Insert sanded down just a little bit further, for that nice recessed look

Cleaned up the CGs and made them more symmetrical. The Athaya crown should sit perfectly once it's on the case

I can also confirm that the PT case WILL accept the gen-spec Athaya 7020 tube without modification. The case is even slightly countersunk so the tube sits nearly perfect, it might take a tiny bit of drilling for absolute perfection though.

How does the 702 crown look? Well I don't know! I only got the tube, so I'll be waiting another few weeks again..

It's awesome how great your Sub looks with a little elbow grease, solid work! The insert ccouldn't have "aged" better and the 702 crown will set it off perfectly. Rock it with pride!

I have the same build recently done using PC cartel case and Athaya 702 tube and crown. It fits perfectly, although I modified by myself to PCG build

Will be attempting to bleach the insert, soften and age the case and try the spray on dial and hands. Probably will mess something up lol.

Darby does your bezel click? Mine just spins... not freely but its smooth

Welps looks like I messed up the dial. The salt water was too blobby and now it looks like waterspots all over lol. It actuall ylooks nice but how legit can water spots on a vintage watch be...

Yeah, I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. I have a feeling this won't leave my wrist for a while once it's completed!

Very nice, I absolutely love the PCG 7928. I almost got the Cartel case for this build since people said the PT ones weren't mod friendly, but these are pretty good too if you ask me. I think my next build will have to be a PCG gilt dial closed track 7928

I messed up with my Athaya order though. Not only did I only get a tube, but it's one that only works with a gen 702! I don't feel like spending a bunch of money on the gen crown, so the tube will have to go up in Watch Parts and I'll be ordering a tube/crown set to wrap up the build.

@yodog Nice nato! I've actually got an oxblood one sitting around for this one too.

The bezel is bi-directional without a ratcheting system. That's actually accurate to gen, since they weren't uni-directional or ratcheting either. There's supposed to be some sort of friction spring/washer under the bezel on the gen, which made it safer for diving. I might see if that will fit on the rep bezel assembly.

The salt spray thing is tricky, I spent a while practicing with a piece of matte plastic. With a fine misting spray bottle (think hair product bottle), I was 2 feet back and 1 foot above the dial/hands, spraying up in the air at a 45 degree angle. The water also has to be very hot so it'll atomize better, and dry instantly on the dial.

If you aren't stoked on the water-spots, Bonesy's vintage guide https://forum.replica-watch.info/vb...How-to-age-your-Vintage-Rolex-(Bonesey-style) has a dial aging method that should remove them. After you're done the dial will look even better

Finally! Got the Athaya crown/tube in the mail today. Fits the case perfectly, and has an O ring between the case and tube where the stock one didn't. It's just metal on metal with the stock tube which isn't water resistant at all, the new tube and crown should aid greatly with WR.

I'll post some comparisons between the new crown/tube and the stock one tonight

I know right? The wait was killing me, the first purchase was a week faster in delivery. Here's a quick phone pic of the test fitting, DSLR pics will come later tonight

Excellent build darby g

the crown is a nice touch... I ordered the 700 for my Cartel build. Mines is a fantasy build using a gen dial from a different reference....

Thanks again DVNE

I was going to get the 700, but wanted to give this watch some more authenticity with a service replacement crown, considering I kept a lot of the chamfering. It gives it the look of a beater watch that was serviced once 25 years ago. I might try a PCG build with the same base, but different dial and hands.

You should post some pics of that build of yours, it sounds pretty cool!

As promised, here's a lineup of my new Athaya 702, and the stock crown.

First up is the Athaya, the coronet is well defined, and finishing is top notch. Little-to-no tooling marks on the crown, even on the knurled portion. Also notable would be the o-ring at the end of the threads that feed into the case. This helps tremendously with water resistance, and Athaya has this on every tube sold.

Here's the stock crown, not much going on here.. Soft coronet imprint, from a 703 no less, and also inaccurate for a 703 (and for this watch). The knurling is very rounded and has more teeth than any gen crown. Tooling marks are abundant as well. There isn't an o-ring present between the case and tube, so WR is compromised.

Side by side these are night and day. The stock crown's knurling is way too long, and the crown itself sticks out from the side of the case.

Now this one is just for fun, here I've got the Athaya 702 on the left, and a brand new TC 703 on the right. After close examination of both I've found the Athaya to have superior finishing. Here you can see that the finishing of the knurling is smoother, while the TC has more tooling marks left behind. While I'm happy with both, the result surprised me, although it's better than the slipping Noob V2 114060 crown it's replacing!

Thanks for the comparison and write up! Lovely watch and very nice 702 crown, it's the icing on the cake.
