I know it's a little late. But I am on at night mostly as you know. So here are the totals as I counted them up.

#3 - 1
#5 - 1
#7 - 2
#11 - 1
#12 - 1
#13 - 2
#15 - 1
#19 - 3
#20 - 2
#21 - 1
#23 - 2
#25 - 1
They're all fake - 3
All fake but one - 2

No one got it right. I have two folders that I keep research pictures in. One is Replica Research. The oher is Gen Research. All of these pictures came from the second file. Yes they are all gens. All the pictures were from random places that I have collected over the years. 20 was the only one I didn't have a pic of on a different background. I said I wasn't going to give any hints. But actually the title itself did contain one.

Spot The Fake?

And I never said one of them WAS fake. I said this:

All I need for you to so is tell me which one you think is the fake.

Now I have to say that Maxlove's comment was pretty cool.

NO. 19
Reason: The crown guard is way off and the engraving on the back of the case is wrong. The buckle looks a bit suspicious as well as the Lume not being very good.

His comment was a hilarious way of saying that he didn't have a clue and there was no way to tell. Although not the correct answer it was certainly the most honest. I should send him something anyway.

The whole purpose of this experiment was to determine whether a 'good; rep can be spotted under normal conditons. Well it can't. We focus so much on the flaws and so little on the positives that we get absorbed by it. People are actually walking into ADs and accusing them of having fakes in their cases.

I think another problem is that we are so used to seeing our watches displayed in a macro shot that we forget what they really look like in the real world. The pictures shown here were scaled that way and it made many of you crazy. So much so that you were actually manufacturing flaws in your minds. I love to see the big pics too. But the real world is where we wear the watches. And in the real world the average watch is seen on a person's wrist, half under a sleeve, often moving and at hip level. Possibly for a moment when the wearer is glancing at the time. So take that into consideration when buying one.

The point here is that even with all their flaws, our reps a prety damn good. So whether you are experienced or a Noob, if you want to mod things feel free to. But don't do it because you think you have to. Do it because you want to. In the end the only person that is going to care about your half lume dot is you. The majority of people do not care nor know what kind of watch you are wearing much less whether it is right. The others know that reps exist. And people being the way they are (self centered and jealous) they'tr going to pick you aprat no matter what you have on. Between the clueless ones and them there is one important thing to consider. The best way to put it would be this:

People are more apt to think you're gen is fake long before they will think you're Rep is real.

As I've said a million times. Get what you want. Get what makes you happy. And remember...it's just a freaking watch. Don't take things so seriously. :D

Oh, and Fakemaster, I forgot to tell you that I hate you. I spent hours (well, not really hours maybe) looking at those blurry photos and I couldn't even get together a guess. :)

No. You really do like the torturing part. But yes, you are a VERY good educator! :D (Thanks!)

Very interesting read. I am with the "Fakemeister", most people don't care what you wear and most never heard of a Panerai. Rolex and Omega are perhaps the only 'luxury" brands they've ever heard. The ones in the know are probably rep enthusiasts themselves.

I have a very large circle of friends, seldom have I been asked about what I am wearing. Fortunately on those rare occasions I was wearing genuine articles. My close friends all know I wear reps.

FM Thanks for getting it!

This was indeed a cool thread!

I still think that the buckle on #19 looks kinda dodgy! :D

Those pics are grainy as hell! Fakes, if *that* is what watches look like to you from 4 feet off, you need some spectacles, my friend.

In the end, pics ain't real life. In real life, I can easily spot an unmodified sandwich dial rep from 4 feet off. The shape of the 2 and the bright white font are a dead give away.

I appreciate the point you're trying to make, but you're tilting the field to your advantage, IMO.

I officially change "grainy" to "pixelated". Look at the edges of the bezels, etc. Those are VERY pixelated pictures. Probably from when you shrank them.

The spirit of my other post remains intact, however. Those pics aren't representative of real life and you're stacking the deck in your favor.

In the real world watches will be seen under a person's shirt sleeve on an arm that's moving at waist level 80% of the time. And at a distance. If I had wanted to slant it I would have taken wrist shots under those conditions. If you think my picture was small then you don't have to believe me. Put a watch on a table at waist height, measure a distance of five feet and take another look. I think you'll be surprised.

If you're wearing a decent rep under normal conditions you will not get called out. I haven't gotten called out in 20 years. That can't be accident or luck. And it's because for the most part, no one knows or cares what you are wearing. Of course I don't shove my watches under everyone's face or lay them down on the AD counters either. I don't know what you guys are doing.

I think the point has gotten lost as usual. This was ultimately a way to allieviate all the apprehensions that noobs have about their first watch purchases. And a simple experiment in human psychology. Would people looking at gens, in lieu of not being able to see them clearly as you said, manufacture imaginary flaws in their minds. Well they did and it was a hoot.
