Gen is gen. Never forget that. Even the best modded and frankens are still not gen. Without these forums there is no market for them and they become worthless. I have owned several gen Pams and only don't right because I cannot afford it. If money wasn't an issue, u can bet ur ass I would own several.

Agree 100%. The $700 WM9YM is techinically illegal and therefore worthless. The only place they are worth money is on these forums.

I just both another gen ONLY BECAUSE there are no good reps of the 42mm 392. The in-house P9000 is nice but way too loud!
My gen sub C feels more solid with pretty much same price tag.
But damn... This watch is so sexy! I don't care whether PAM are just fashion watches but the 392 is damn sexy! My reps PAMs are down to two. So two gens (another gen is 40mm 048) & two reps for me right now.

While I still stand by my "gen is gen" startement, I will say that my $500 zf Bronzo does as good of a job as its $30k gen counterpart. If I had the money to spend on a gen it would be of a midel they don't rep.

Interesting thoughts from all. I've been reading all the responses and I have arrived at a conclusion; I still have no idea whether to go gen or not! Back to square 1. Net net, I love trying different models, hard to do with gens (unless you go through the painful process of trying to sell a watch that costs £4k minimum each time. On the flip side, the reps are so well made ( 292J, 000, 11 and 243 etc....), can I really justify the extra cash for that final 1%? Not sure yet. But I get what NCchef says, a gen is a gen and that I agree with 100%. Time will tell.....for now, what a great hobby to enjoy !!

Maybe try a couple reps and a vintage? That way you can see what you think of the rep quality. The vintage will give you a different perspective and also something that is one of a kind. I just got this one from Henio, so it has the PAM look and feel, but nothing else is out there exactly like it (well unless someone has Henio build the exact model for them)!
:)

Will only get gen pam 317 equivalent movement complications.. The rest of the pams, reps would do :)

In my opinion, in the end, the purchase of a gen is a personal choice and holds special meaning to those of us collecting reps, especially if you're going gen with pams. It basically has to be a specific Pam you love so much you want the gen version of it. As I mentioned earlier, there's plenty of people here who have bought gens pams that are repped very well. If you're starting out in the rep world I'd recommend you play with various reps for a yr or so, figure out which watch "speaks" to you most, then figure out if you'd prefer to get the gen or can live with the rep. Either way, it's a personal choice only you can make and no one else can judge you for.

Like some of the others have said... I started my Pam life with a gen Pam 380. I got it to be more of a dress watch to wear with my suits as my other gens consist of more sporty and very bulky Breitling for Bentlys, Seawolfs and a SOH 46. After owning the Radiomr for about a year I started getting the itch for a luminor (I couldn't stand Luminors a year ago) and fell for the 390 but always being to slow in the sales sections I couldn't manage to nab one. luckily I was just able to acquire from NCchef (beautifully modded I might ad)

iv'e owned a gen sub, a gen explorer and still own a gen montblanc timewalker auto. i have changed my mind about gens and reps, i started with gens and loved them but then fell in love with pam reps. the reason i fell in love with reps was because of the brand panerai, i belive as someone else stated, the 6947 movement is not worth the money for a gen, build a good rep. but the new in house movements," i feel" are worth the money. right now i'm in the process of looking for a gen 359 and a 18k yellow gold yacht master.

I've had bad experiences with a couple of dealers (TDs of another forum, and not this one), and that pushed me to buy gen.

The problems I've encountered were really discouraging (e.g. date wheel on a PAM was of a completely different font and not PAM-like at all, the engraving on the back was of a completely different ink color, the bezel on the rolex was off by 4mm, the backside of the IWC was very different from the QC pics). I then caved and purchased a pam510, and I've been having a lot of fun dressing up the watch with different straps ever since. I also have the peace of mind that if I let someone wear the watch, I wouldn't have to worry whether someone will scrutinize whether it's a gen or rep, because I can confidently say that it's a gen.

That being said, I am keen to buy rep pams from this point on, until probably my next life's milestone. I'm particularly looking out for radiomirs now, and keen to get my hands on a really nice 448, 449, and 514. :)

Hi there from a fellow singaporean! congrats man the 510 is a lovely watch, i'm sure the 8days movement must be amazing and only having to wind once a week should be great haha. anyways, if you didn't know, there has recently been released a beautiful rep of the 448, i myself just bought it and it's impeccable, with a few minor flaws here and there but by far the best rep of a 448. has a p3000 super clone movement which is supposed to have a proper 72 hours+ PR but so far mine has lasted about a week before having to wind it up again! awesome stuff. can be found from most TDs here :)

here's a few shots:

i too would loooooove a 514 rep it's really beautiful imo!

cheers :)

I went into an AD today to buy an PAM380 - I was hugely underwhelmed?! I had a rep 210 not long ago and it wasn't that dissimilar.

Maybe I would notice more of the "gen" presence of a Luminor?

For me I got a rep pam 127 first when it was first released by noob.. Got fascinated by the watch and wanted to try their in house Mvmt hence got myself a gen pam 441, since then I had reps 363,390.. Reps quality would not really lose to gen but gen holds a special feeling :)

Well, after all this gen talk, I ended up biting the bullet and going gen.
Should receive it tomorrow, pics to follow.

I've gone gen, several times. I had a 210, a 002, a 114 and a 000. Gens are gens, reps never measure up - not even really nice reps. I've owned a rep 196 with Swiss 7753, a polished-bezel 024A with gen crown and one of Davidsen's 027As with the SOPROD movement and a gen CG.

Currently I wear my gen PO chrono almost exclusively. My BPSD barely leaves the box, I do wear my "vintage" 47mm Rad from River every now and then.

Thanks all for your inputs! Interesting reads. I finally pulled the trigger on a gen PAM287. Arrives tomorrow morning. Feel like a kid at Christmas!
