So....who's gone gen?

I'd love to hear from members that started in rep land then bought a gen PAM.

I did with my Tag Heuer and now weighing up whether a gen PAM is genuinely worth the extra £$£

Look forward to your views....!

It's tricky with pams I feel. I've been hunting for a gen Pam that I would love at I price I can live with, but the biggest issue in the back of my head with Pam is that they're repped so well these days I almost feel like it's not worth the extra money. Most brands aren't repped OOTB as well as Pam is I feel, so I think it's easier to justify going gen with other brands.
That being said, I know a number of people here have gone gen with Pam on models that are repped reasonably well (372, 510, 505, etc). It really boils down to how much YOU love the watch. Also, if the gen Pam you want has an in-house movement makes a difference. If you ever play with a gen Pam with the in-house movement there's a BIG difference in the feel.
I was all set to pick up a gen 388 recently but have now decided to wait for prices to drop a little on the 514 and live with the rep 388.

I won't go gen with a PAM as I have had such good luck so far. Now I am getting into the vintage/homage pieces, so that is really something I am looking forward to. Plus with some Marlin modded pieces, I have ones that are really well built and better than I could have ever hoped for.

Gen is gen. Never forget that. Even the best modded and frankens are still not gen. Without these forums there is no market for them and they become worthless. I have owned several gen Pams and only don't right because I cannot afford it. If money wasn't an issue, u can bet ur ass I would own several.

I agree here. I am on the hunt for a gen rolex 618 movement to build a 6154 vintage watch. I would rather spend $2-3 grand on this movement then put the money into a gen 111.

The PAM reps are so good that Id rather blow the extra money on crack then spend it on a gen. Now if you were after a gen rollie that would be a different story.

Can't blame you there. A 618 would make a nice engine for a vintage piece.

couldn't have said it better myself: "gen is gen". If you ever want to find this out yourself, go fiddle with a Pam in-house movement for a few minutes then play with your Asian movement on your rep. Miles apart......

I used to hate Pam a year back and was only into Hublot and AP, later Mikewatch got me into Pam, and now I have a gen Pam 510:), all in one year.

I bought a Gen Pam then later I a rep ... Then reps all the way. No point paying premium . But Gen still stands out from the rest .... Too bad modern fraken PAMs are not really an option as the parts are not sold openly in the market.

PAM reps using the 6497 movement are with the exception of some finish work as good as the gen they represent in both function and appearance. I've had them both side by side and taken apart both. So baring the newer in house watches I would never go gen on a 6497 PAM. Now it's a completely different story when it comes to the manifactura (in-house movements) they have put out in the last few years, but give our friends in China some time and that too might be overcome if the demand is there.

I have two reps now, 390N and 312_V2. Both are fantastic watches. But they are not gens. In everyday life it doesn't matter, but in a level of feel it does. Big part of owning gen is a money paid (yes really) and feeling that you get while wearing something that is worth more than your can really afford, or just barely afford. And then there is also this inhouse thing in movements, which means a lot to me. I think now that I will buy more PAM reps in a future, just to find out which one I like most and then buy a gen of that particular model. But I'm also going to keep reps as a part of my collection and daily wearers. I'm also trying to find Fiddy ála Marlin from M2M or directly from him when available again. That looks so sweet and costs more than I'm willing to pay as a gen. Then mayby some nice vintage built also... so much temptations around. But basically I see one gen with inhouse movement and a lot of reps in my PAM future.

To me the problem with PAMs is that one is not enough at all, so I could never sell my collection to fund a single gen.
As NCchef said, if money wasn't an issue I would have several gens.

Not a pam. I've owned decent gens but never owned a genuine Rolex. I've had so many watches but the BPSD I built was so good I felt like was fooling MYSELF. It's the only watch that made me feel like I owed it to be real. Hard to explain but I think the 16660 might be "the one". That $5,000 is proving elusive however.

I think when you "go gen" you never "leave reps" they are too fun.

Also I agree about never buying a MODERN hand wound. But the early Pre-A to B Series tritium dials...Those are still at the top of my list. You can't beat a gen T dial.

i actually did the opposite, as i started with gens then went to reps. it all started when stumbled across this site by searching "panerai parts" on the web..lol
anyway, as ncchef said, gen is gen...no franken or super rep will ever substitute a gen watch. rep watch makers can make a watch look 99.9% identical to the real thing, but they will never be able to mimic that "feeling" of wearing a gen..at least not for me.

regardless..i love both equally..lol

I wear my Franken PO more than my Gen PO. Even on "special" occasions. The Gen is kind of boring.

I'd never buy a gen pam just because the sheer quality that these rep factories are producing for pams.

I have however purchased a gen blancpain after about a year+1/2 of collecting reps. I do however sometimes wish I still had a collection of reps. Maybe one day. maybe one day..
