Hey, all!

The newbie I am here still, I've not only searched the forum re: this concern but ALSO searched RWI via Google [thanks to a suggestion from my friend Dave here]. That said, I found only one thread with one or two replies -- not very enlightening.

On the eve of Trump's inauguration, I'm wondering your thoughts on increased scrutiny at US ports of entry for parcels, any increased costs for tariffs [heck, will TD's even pay tariff fees?] or any general issues.

If so, knowing the slow wheel of bureaucracy, I suspect changes wouldn't be immediate -- if at all.

That said, I'd urge those receiving or expecting packages in the US after 1/20/2025 to update us on anything out of the ordinary.

I'm looking to buy my second rep after a great first purchase, but wanted to see what waters are like after the Trump's administration is in full effect.

Thanks, all.

You have a higher risk shipping via UPS or DHL. Ship via China slow post and you will be fine.

DHL

dhl fedex and ups contract inspectors receive bountie$ for catching illicit goods. Postal workers don’t.
Thats intersting, I thought all incoming packages went through us customs regardless of carrier.
Do DHL, Fedex and UPS hire on top of the already existing to catch our watches?

People should drop FedEx from either their personal or business accounts.

They are the most expensive and for the exception of Over night express and other priority options, they contract these private contractor drivers who are mean, always late, don't give a shit or blatantly steal.
They might as well hire uber eats to do their fucking deliveries.

Fuck FedEx domestic or international.

They have their own “inspectors” that contract for US customs

Tariffs will make sure all goods are inspected before coming into the US. Remeber USPS is a federal entity. If there is an order to hold and inspect all packages and collect tariffs on them, no matter DHL UPS USPS or Fedex it will be a PITA.

I will add that using Fedex/UPS etc on any goods coming into Canada, where I am, pretty much guarantees customs duties. I always have stuff i buy online shipped local/gov't mail system to avoid this. If a vendor gives forces you to use FedUp/UPiss I'll bypass that vendor and look elsewhere.

These tariffs, if they happen, are idiotic and will 100% make things from Canada more expensive for Americans, FWIW. Tariff = tax and tax paid by the consumer, not the initial seller.

The shipping companies do not pay the tariffs, the tariffs are paid by the American companies when they come into the United States. It is interesting to see how many people think that China is paying the tariffs. We are a fairly large automotive tool company and import a large amount of product from all over the world. Believe me, we pay the tariffs! Basically any shipment out of China we are hit with 25% right off the top. And that is, of course, passed on to the American people. And I'm really not sure where that money is going, but the government sure must be making a pretty good slush fund out of it!

Tariffs are not mainly designed to generate revenue but to protect economies. The cost of tariffs is always passed on to the consumer/client so the assertion that tariffs will "tax" anything but the consumers/companies of the country implementing them is laughable. When the use of tariffs leads to a trade war, the primary and immediate victims are always the consumers.

That being said, when correctly and rationally used tariffs are a good way to level the playing field. Sometimes, foreign made products benefit from a lower cost of labor, more lax regulatory frameworks or even subsidies that put locally made products at an unfair disadvantage and the best way to correct that is through tariffs. Also, sometimes there are economic activities that suffer from a lack of competitivity but that need to be protected because of their strategic importance. For example, a country may need to protect its agricultural production to avoid becoming dependent on foreign actors for its food supply. That's the reason why the biggest challenge in free trade agreements negotiation is always to agree on the goods that would be excluded from the scope of the FTA.

I personally think that the smartest way to use tariffs is not to impose them but to threaten with imposing them in order to negotiate.
