@carnut: you have a not accurate rep of this PAM036. :p It's an OK watch anyway ^^

That may be true... I'm a noob when it comes to reps and wanted 1 Pam w/o spending a ton of $$. Sitting at the beach in the before-mentioned white linen shirt having a cool beverage- I doubt anyone would know the difference (unless I'm sitting next to one of you or a Pam expert).

Hey- You don't need to apologize EVER.

You like it- YOU wear it.

To get a decently made mechanical watch for a couple of hundred bucks or les is still a great value. If you thing isn't trying to get the ultimate-ultimate forgery- no need to apologize.

haha. i WISH I could still think like that. ahhh those heady days where lume color and cannon pins were not something that kept you awake at night. thats how we all start out..then we learn to nitpick a bit and whammo. obsessed watch freak

it happened to me....beware....beware

Here is the one I relumed today

I tried to keep a smooth finish even after 3 coats of lume mixture

Matt036b.jpg

Now look the difference between rep lume and superluminova 8)

Matt036a.jpg

Dark room lume shot..even after 3 coats the hands are more bright :? I didn't wanted to apply any more coats because it will look raised.
I used a mix of different pigments to match the hand lume color (uncharged)

Just to add few more comments to the mix...

Ruby's latest 036 comes with updated dial txt and numerals. IMO it's much better than the dial on its predecessor. Case is still the same - it's now a well known oddball case, that can be sourced on only 036 and another Ti model Josh sells, or as a part (case/crystal/CG/crown etc) from Homer. Homer also sells the whole Ti watch stripped of all Panerai markings.

Although not as bright as a re-lumed one, the stock standard 036 from Ruby still glows...however not even near as bright as a relumed one. This is actually OK by me, as it is much closer to what the gen lume should be these days...being Tritium and all that. 'Navitimer' sent me some pics of his Ruby 036 charged dial, and it's not worse than standard lume you get on any 44mm Luminor reps these days. Have to admit, though, the one shown by Vacuum is pretty bad.

Note:
There's a catch with Ruby's 036. It comes with much thinner dial than the one that comes on standard reps, so the cannon pin doesn't require fixing - HOWEVER - if you ever decide to 'upgrade' the dial to a standard rep 036 MM like the one you can source from Paul @Wo-mart for $30 - be careful, you'll first need to fix the short cannon pin, and then have some MAJOR pain when re-installing the dial and movement back into the case. Ruby's and Homer's cases are built to accept thin dials by default.
I've done it myself, so I can speak...it was a major nightmare, bits flying everywhere, and definitelly wouldn't try it again on my own.

If you ever decide to do this with your 'ruby-036', send it to Vacuum, Ziggy, RJB or other more experienced modders, trust me it's not worth the pain.

as always, my 2 cents...

cheers,
babola

can anyone comment on Joshua's 036? I've looked the photos on his site and that is one FAT crown. I think it's the fattest I've seen. I'm curious if it would be a good alternative to DVSN. All it needs is a relume and cannon pin upgrade. What do you think, would that be a better overall choice? I'm just concerned with DVSN's QC problems of late.

Josh and Ruby are currently selling the same 036 rep. Neither requires pin fix since the dial is much thinner than standard rep dial.

Crap, just as I suspected!

This certainly puts a damper on one of my projects...

I imagine that the back of the dial needs to be grinded down using a dremel sanding disc and a lot of patience? I don't work on my watches, and always have Ziggy and Vaccum do it, but I am not sure they love to get these kind of "projects".

Is Josh 176 the same "thin dial" case? It seems from his picture that the dial is thick enough so that there is a cannon pin issue. Is this case different form the 036 case?

Also is Ruby's Ti pam REALLY Ti? For what I understand Homer's are all Ti, but I have heard some rumors about Ruby's not being Ti, but other metal.

Finally, Babola, what "regular" quality Ti cases are out there? I don't care about historical accuracy or any of that as I collect Frankenwatches. I really don't want to be buying "nightmare" cases for my projects if I can do something about it...

Many thanks!

Cheers,

So the sum of it is, it seems like Ruby's 36 is a good purchase, especially at 220 bucks, and that the only real obvious mod needed are reluming and better strap?

Do I have it right? :?

I'm assuming that Ruby's 36 NOT being real Ti case is just a rumor, right?

It is a super good purchase for the price. You get nice thick TI crown with most of the detail right front and back & even the movement. Someone has mentioned that a few of the "L" dials were produced for 036 models, but I think it's still a flaw... There is a discussion regarding rep Pam 036 on paneristi.com... it's been called out... and it wasn't just because of the L dial, but later it was mentioned that L dial is their way of knowing for sure.

I really like Ruby's 036 and all the nice features it comes with it, but the reason I am not making the purchase is that there aren't many of these produced... only 300 I believe. Not as believable overall... to me anyway.
I couldn't pull off something like this (not that I am trying to fool people... I'd rather they don't question me though when they see it)

Here is a photo of a recent purchase from a board member. It's the 036 that Vacuum modded with the thicker dial, superlume dial and hands and the canon pin fix. It has the thicker crown (which I like) and a supple GeF strap. This is the watch that seems to be getting the most use.

So, I'm thinking that it's one of the most accurate reps (-the T dial) out of the box? I'm not crazy about the superlume anyway, especially given that the gen is 9 years old now and will NOT have good lume by now.

What do you all think?

Yes, if the lume is irrelevant to you, than the only real visual flaws from the front of the watch are the "L" dial and the crown only being beveled on the outside edge. A great rep for $220. Right up at the top of the "bang for the buck" list, if not THE top.

Do it.
