Price premium for better movements

Just been wondering if the +- $100 dollar premium for say a 2824 over the 21J is worth it?I've got a cheap patek which I'm sure sure is 21J and it has incredible power reserve as well as been keeping good time and never given me problems over the past few years.

Is it really worth paying $100 extra for something you don't even see? And even with a more expensive movement there is always the risk of it dying too.

Depends on how much that sweet sweet 28k sweeping seconds hand is worth it to you.

yea and people seem to have trouble with the clones as well. i like my cheap 21j's. i have no experience with the clones yet. so i guess if the better sweep is worth it...go for it?

The annoying rotor sound in a21j's is what keeps me from them.

I can actually feel the spinning in a21j's sometimes. Feels and sounds cheap...

Just my experience with them.

Extremely reliable and durable though. Loved my fakey's.

Very true, but you can also get that sound from the 7750's.

It's a lottery.

in many cases you are paying more for the case set as well...the cheaper movement versions often have a crappier case set (dial, case, band etc).

there are some 21j gems out there that are a great value but the higher end versions with clone movements are generally a better more accurate watch

agreed, and it't really hard to tell which 21j's are "gems" and which ones aren't without actually seeing them in person. When in doubt, I always go for the clone.

I also like the smoother sweep. It's a very subtle difference. I know I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference from more than a few feet away, let alone on someone else's moving wrist, but when I examine my personal watches closely, I like seeing the smoother sweep. Worth the money IMO...

I'm pretty much done with 7750 movements, especially the chronograph movements. It's not that I've found them that much less reliable than the simpler movements. It's just that when something DOES go wrong, it's a royal pain to get fixed---->2836= send to katt, get back better than ever in a week, 7750= spend 3 days looking for someone to work on it, ship it, wait 3-6 months, and MAYBE it will work...

i am nervous of a ferrari built by fifth graders (a7750). it seems like if you look at it like a project watch and are ok with piling money in to it. then well; have at it ;) i may roll the dice on a a7750 in the new 104. we will see.

Just don't fall for the "Swiss" scam..>>>

New Swiss ETA movements in replica watches are very rare these days....In fact, they've been "rare" for the past several years...If in fact you're fortunate enough to actually get a Swiss ETA, It'll almost certainly be an old well worn one that may or may not have been serviced...If you REALLY need to see your second hand tick 8 times /sec, get a clone, or maybe a 4813 21J......But 6 ticks works just fine for me, and virtually all automatic movements have rotors you can hear turning if you're anal enough!!!

Lol....

I've got a box full of 2836's.... All broken. 6 of them.

Ironically, all my 7750 and 7753's running like champs. ALL OF THEM. 9 watches.

sounds like its a toss up no matter what you buy :(

Yeah every time I've got my mind set on a particular watch I end up reading a bit too much and discover some issue with the watch that changes my mind completely :(

I don't have any 2836 movement watches...I do now have 2 7750's and had 7 in total...
I also had NO problem with them...I never run the chrono, and no how to change the date correctly also...But this dun change the fact that it's a crap movement.

I kind of agree.
Mine have all been flawless as well but when something is put together using terrible parts, no QC, poor training, working for a dollar a day, what can you really expect??

With a full servicing I feel like they will be reliable but I dont have any long term experiance

What is your oldest 7750?? Still working?

My first a7750 outlasted all of my 21j watches. Thing I like about 7750 is that you can get gen eta's for a good price so when the a7750 dies put in a gen eta 7750 and in many watches that is the exact same movement as the gen.

In reality, I think they are both FAIRLY reliable out of the box, It's just soooo much less hassle to get a NON-7750 fixed if there is a problem...

(If anyone knows a place where I can get a rep 7750 fixed in less than a month, PLEASE let me know....)
