Panerai is ugly

I know I'm going to get bashed for this, but here I go. I'm an avid watch collector, I have both Gens (Rolex datejust, omega constellation, rado, JLC) and also some reps. I clearly don't understand the Panerai craze. I've been to the ADs in Paris (where I used to live) and also Boston (where I currently live) and again Panerai seems like the ugliest watch to me. I was having the same discussion with a friend of mine, a keen watch collector, and he put it best when he said "well as for that italian pie watch, it literally looks like it's worth 5 bucks, I don't get it!!" Even owners of Panerai that I've talked to say that it is indeed overpriced for the specs (but then one may argue so are others).

I see Panerai as what I call a "placebo watch". You are told it's amazing so you buy it, hollywood stars wear it so you buy it, but is it really? So, I apologize, but these are what our forums are for. Now let me have it...

Well, I love my panerai watches, but just as u said the gens are waaaay overpriced. For the prices they are fetching I would rather buy a gen IWC or JLC.

It all depends on the watch in question. My rep pam 90 looks way nicer than my freinds gen pam. I have seen some that are great and others that are just so-so. To me rolex is the most overated watch period. they are small, light and feel cheap and flimsy. I guess JCM1662 summed it up best. to each his own.

As JCM said to each his own. They have grown on me more and more. I liked the brand when I first saw it on a magazine. Did not know who or what or when wore it.

Simple and elegant watches.

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication - Leonardo Da Vinci

I agree that Panerai don't *look* like expensive watches. The tool watch appearance is a large part of the attraction, IMO.

Yes, they are overpriced for the fact that they simply use reworked Unitas/ETA/Valjoux movements. However, their new in-house movements are pretty impressive. Once they are using their own movements in ALL their watches, they'll have just as much right to charge $5K for a SS watch as any other luxury brand, IMO.

ALL luxury watches are overpriced.

yeah....i don't know...

I have gen Rolex's....but I love the Pam's....and actually they get more wrist time!

It's the size and uniqueness that makes them UGLY COOL???

My rollies never get that..." wow, what kind of watch is that" question....and I've never been called out that its a rep....my gens get called reps all the time....go figure!

Not sure about the connection between body hair and the Panerai...but OK...?

With that said....I guess I REALLY love my pams...and enjoy them without all the hair....huh?

I don't know... I like the 70's porn bush. The whole completely shaved thing creeps me out.

As for Pams, yes, they're over-rated given their ETA engines; they are 5~15K USD Swatches for X sake! But so are Omegas, Breitlings, and Cartiers for that matter. A lot of these are Man jewerly really; so it's matter of taste in design, and the Italians DO seem to have the upper hand over Parisians in that regards (Ooooooooh... who's stirring the pot now?)

When you REALLY talk about "worth the money" level timepieces, I think Girrard Perregaux is underrated, along with gen Hublot, Sinn, Glashute, Graham, and actually, Seikos.

Not being sarcastic here... as for daily beating, that keeps on ticking, Timex really is superb. (You still won't catch me with it tho')
