It appears to me you have some crusty egotistical Italian taking it out on a customer. No more and no less. And by the way Richemont will fire his ass in 20 seconds if Panerai sales fall. You ever see Vacheron or Patek restricting sales? Maybe on a one-off item but in truth there are a finite number of folks who can afford the real fabulous complications. It is easier to act like a jerk when you sell very few pieces and they are low cost enough that virtually anyone with a good job can afford them. Wait until Panerai has to reach the sales quotas that Rolex does.

On the ridiculous repair bill it is truly insulting given that the watch has $300 worth of parts max. But all AD repair services are outrageously priced. Service and polishing gold Breguet - $1,300. Repair of a crystal which blew out due to heat at the beach - $1200. Each took 2-3 months to get them back. Now I always buy second-hand from reputable folks and utilize skilled watchsmith for all work. By the way your watchsmith will actually give a hoot. You are his customer. AD repair has no customers and are responsible to no one.

'Paneristi' must be shaking in their boots on even a slightest thought of servicing their watches in Panerai service centres in the future :) :) :)

Some of them were saving their hard earned cash for few years before they could afford their 'dream' watch. They must be dissaointed by level and type of after-sale service Panerai provides.

cheers,

The corporate point is spot-on. Luxury goods are a highly competitive market niche, w/ LVMH, Gucci and others waiting to pounce on any slippage - should Panerai suddenly not be as popular they will eat that up - and "viral marketing", such as paneristi.com, is a key component of their marketing strategy - especially as PAM buyers tend to younger / savvier about trends, than the profile of a 'vanilla' Rollie or Jaeger buyer (brands like Patek, Lange & Sohne are in their own rarified air). If S Bonati blows it he's outta there.

enzo made a good point too: they likely had to do more than simply pick a spare dial out of a box, this was a ltd, old, piece, and they may well have made it = huge market opp Davidsen! :)

It is irresponsible of companies to make something as particular as limited edn. watches / cars, which are intended, when rare, for long, lives as collectibles. Patek's advertising is keyed on this long-run 'father-to-son' heirloom, and I gather they do make a parts commitment - which is also likely why they cost a bomb!

The service business for the gens is a huge margin business; same for luxury cars once out of warranty (dealer makes more on this than the sale) - as I know to my personal cost :?

well they cannot stop him from purchasing a watch off the shelf but pre-ordering a Panerai may be tricky for him. I don't think that Panerai really would expect this decision to be enforced, I consider it as the company making a statement to that particular buyer. Ludicrousicy!

Makes good business sense
(to OP)
Screw tha dude for dial and service @ $3,000.00

then they double screw him with a lifetime banishment..

the odds he will ever buy a panerai again are likely

slim and next to none....

Life is Good!

Then again maybe its a little bit of reverse pschycology. Screw him with the 3k bill and he'll not buy another panerai, but tell him he is black listed and he might buy one just to prove he can
