So after seeing @cvp3's post on the Moonswatch reps I decided to look around a bit on the Gate and Alibaba. As you know there have been several versions of this rep floating around and they all had mineral crystals and fake battery doors. Colors were off to varying degrees and the movements were microsteppers. So I talked to some sellers I have used and got better info. I talked to my Alibaba guy he had an old version for about $30 with the mineral glass crystal. That's an old version so I passed. The seller who had the most sales on DHGate answered me during CNY and told me he had a new version that had the plexi and better engravings. They still have the microstepper quartz movement. Coupons and quantity discounts brought all that down to $217.19 for all 11 Moonswatch reps. Seemed a no brainer.
I ordinarily would post these in an Ali/Gate section but there isn't one here. In truth you'd be nuts to order these from a TD. Way too cheap elsewhere and there is no margin on these for a TD and shipping would kill the deal.
They got here in 17 days and 5 of those were waiting for CNY to end to be able to ship. I really like these and and I was sure I would not. While they are not spot on, these are really nice looking. I'll look at one of them in detail and then show you all the dials.
So lets start with the group pic:
and now the Uranus model. Biggest issue is the dial. Its iridescent , but the gen is flat. It actually looks better than the gen to me. The ad said that it has an S in the center of the plexi and its there.
I'd note that this strap is supposed to be the same length as the gen, and in order to see all that Speedmaster logo stuff on the band your wrist can't exceed 7.5 inches. You can still wear it but I think it would look funny.
Now all the different dials. There are shade variations between the reps and gens if you compare them online but I don't think anyone would ever know the difference unless you had them side by side. The Saturn for instance looks a bit different than the gen, but not worse. And its a difference in the color graduation in the planet, hardly noticeable.
And I honestly think some of these reps look better than the gens.
Note that this one has the 9 subdial installed incorrectly. I fixed it but some might not have the skill. Still, 1 out of 11 with a problem isn't bad.
I think I like the Earth one the best.
The battery door looks functional.
And opening one it obviously is. However its far easier to pop off the case back.
So it has a removable case back with a rubber o ring. The battery door is functional too.
I'm replacing all those fake Renata batteries as they are known to leak.
All in all these are good enough for me as the gen ain't all that great either. I got them all for less than one. Great stocking stuffers.
Here is the link I used. Mods take that out if you think it inappropriate. I include it because I think it would be foolish to purchase these from a TD. As I said earlier, no margin for them and ridiculous shipping for something this cheap. Final verdict these punch way above their price point. To me this is what a rep should be. Reasonably close to the gen, and throwaway cheap. YMMV
