As some of you know, I was born in the 11/11/1911 and ohh how many stories I would have to tell! But memory falters and my hands are not as steady as they used to be. So I can only limit myself to a quick hello and a thank you to all of you, for welcoming me and giving me the company of new friends, in my last years.
God bless you all!

It was anything but . . .it was a shared phone line between a cluster of houses. I remember - you used to pick up the phone to phone someone and they'd be the one of your neighbours chatting away to someone on their call. Protocol was you hung up and tried a bit later. The mischievous lad that I was used to listen in for a while but soon get bored.
Happened all the time! I was the same way too, listening in on the nitty gritty. I remember my grandma getting on the phone telling people to hang up because she had an important call to make.

I had 10 days of that experience when visiting family friends in New Brunswick (Canada not New Jersey) and they lived in a rural area that had the party line. Me not knowing that each house had a specific ring I would just answer the phone. After a few times making the mistake of picking up the phone I just gave up and let it ring.
My parents home had a party line. That was about 60 years ago. It was better than no phone. When my kids were young we added a long cord so you could talk with a little privacy.

When I was a little kid in the 1960's we moved to Melbourne (Australia) and they were still using pay(coin) phones like this one. They were a pain to use, especially if you were small and had problems reaching.

The beauty of simplicity

Which reminds me, "la doppietta", the stuff you had to do on the cars without a synchronizer, press the clutch, release gas pedal, set in neutral, release clutch pedal, give some gas, insert the gear at the right time
