Off-catalogue Rolex franken builds - confessions of a Daytonaholic

I've got a different problem. I've got multiple builds moving forward, I'm excited about all of them, but then I get impatient and order a watch from a TD. Then that watch is delayed, and Clean drops a new Pepsi. At the same time, I finally hear back about an out of production vintage rep and I order it. So now I'm back to being on M2M, hunting for watches, buying new ones from TDs, and doing custom builds and frankens.

My first rep ever was a time bomb 116520 about 10 years ago. Since then, I've had a few Daytonas but never for very long. I just didn't feel comfortable wearing them for my own stupid reason of "I couldn't afford the real thing." 10 years down the road, I bought a franken 116523 black dial from JD with gen bracelet and bezel. The weight, the feel of no sharp corners on the bracelet... I'm hooked. I have another 116523 panda dial en route and already bought the gen bezel from Nikz. Now to find a good 78493 to throw on it...

I love two tone Daytonas, but the 116503 bezel is just too busy for me, prefer the older stick bezels on the 116523's.

I went through a similar process as you mate when I first started, favouring reps I could technically afford in gen form If I wanted to. After a while I realised that since I tell people my watches are rep anyway, why does it matter? Plus the Daytona is the perfect size for my smaller wrists and it is lacking in a date complication, which is ideal for a lazy-arse like me who barely remembers to set the correct time when switching between watches

The panda 523 is one of my favourite Daytonas, alongside the blue racing 503, I am hoping to add a two-tone to my collection soon

I can already foresee it spiraling out of control the plus side of franken builds is that it reduces the number of regular inbound packages and gets the missus off my back

because you get packages of parts, tools and consumables which in a way is even worse

plus the troubling amount of time you spend polishing a piece of metal

This is why you get a modder that can order and install all the parts for you and them when it's sent it's only 1 package

I could easily fill a box with exotic Daytonas, my main issue is, i cant get passed the weight issue with gold reps. I know that the lack of correct weight would bug the shit out of me. So for now, i'm "stuck" with 3 steel Daytonas.

Once they figure out a correct tungsten case, bracelet and clasp, AND it can hold a white gold plating, i'm going to be a very, very, very poor man
