Hi guys

Ive already said what a fantastic site this is and the more I read the more I learn - however this has had the adverse effect of really confusing me (easily done I hear you say). Let me explain.

1 The thread about buying 'swiss eta's' was brilliant - learnt a great deal.
2 The dealer section - fantastic just what I needed.
3 varoius other threads on QC etc - great.

My problem - I want to buy this http://www.puretimewatch.com/index.php?productID=803. Purtime is a trusted dealer as listed and rated by you experienced chaps - so far so good.

However after reading about supposed swiss movements I now am unsure if this movement is a marketing hype (works on me:swoon:). and not worth the extra money. The back of the watch is see through so Im presuming it may be a real swiss one as you can see the movement inside - or am I very very wrong in assuming that.

Also it would appear on the eta thread sticky that our trusted dealsrs will still try and misguide us on the types of movement really fitted to the watch which begs the question why are they trusted?

It also goes for the waterproofing >50m? How can I be sure and as avenger quite correctly pointed out to me - how will I know until its too late:wacko: (thanks avenger).

I guess as Im new to this and have always had Gens this hype on movements has caused me to question my purchase on the above watch. Can you help me out - or have I got it all wrong (possibly).

Its also a question that will hopefully point me in the right direction for sometime to come.

Thanks guys

(rather confused) Mark:notworthy:
PS I have searched the forum and seen the sticky about reading before posting etc so please be assured my post is because I feel the above (in my case anyway) is not addressed in the stickys and I hope you all feel that it is a worthwhile thread and not just a newbie posting because he is too lazy to search etc.

Hi guys me again (I hear you sighing)

http://www.watcheden.com/u-boat-tho...iss-eta-unitas-6497-movement-i-29174-p-1.html

Wow - fantastic info supplied on watch detail - so my additional question is swiss eta unitas manual wind - real or not, any good, better or worse reliabilty over an automatic. And check out the depth rating - fantastic 100m - just what I was looking for or is there some poetic licence being employed here?

Please forgive me for all of my questions - its just because i'm new to this and require a little guidence before my first purchase.

Thanks

Mark

If I was going to spend that kind f money, I would spend a bit more and get it water tested to be sure.

if you want to pay extra for swiss, I guess you need to know how to check it IS swiss

IMO

Ive looked at this diagram as a way of telling but it would appear to my novice eyes that the 2 links i have posted seem to be of the same movements? What do you think?

I'll let the experts on ETAs comment on them. I do know however that there has been more than once when one of our experts has had to pull a MVT appart to tell for sure.

Never pay for water proofing from any dealer. The job costs them about five bucks and who knows if the worker who performed it actualy knows WTF they are doing? Much better to have it done by watchstation or somwhere like that at home. At least you know it's been done propperly. If the watch passes (and most do, have him check the back first) it gunna cost you a lot less too. Prob still cost less even if he has to remove the back/stem and grease seals.

I agree with you Col - i would get it checked at home but it was a bonus that it is described as water proof. What i'm really after is the best MVT for my money. I am an engineer but big heavy stuff underwater - no way am I going to attempt to take anything appart on a fiddly little watch - I took my Land Rover apart the other day to fix the diff lock and when it all went back together I had a load of bolts hanging around on the deck that wernt there when I first started:nah:

Daytona is a consultent/broker, not a dealer.
Yes, he can now offer water tests and you can trust the results.

So is the car running alright?

Oh almost forgot. The eta discussion revolves primarily around auto movements. The watch in your link is a handwind. Totally different thing. Now I don't know what the Thousands of Feet is supposed to have. But I have seen quite a few Asian 6497s and I can tell you the damn things are about bulletproof. So from a functionality standpoint I don't see any reason to pay the extra money.

Haha - typical Landie problems.

Yes finally - love Landies - its my 8th one! Got hold of a 98 (last to be made) Disco V8 Premium (50th aniversary type really). Only problem is it does 13mpg and fuel in uk is £1.12 ltr in Devon!!!! My wife is not happy with me!

Only joking about the bolts - there were far more than a few left over:biglaugh:

OK then - time for an update - whilst thinking hard about he U Boat and its various MVTs I sent an email to time4direct about his Bell&Ross BR01 04 he has available - you wont believe it but Robert replyed on new years day! Great so I am buying one now!! Cant wait to get it - he reakons its one of the better reps for B&R - damn I want it now!!!!

Got to say I cannot imagine many companies replying to emails on new years day - fantastic.

Thanks for all the help on the U Boat. Once I have some replys from the reps then I'll get one of those too.

I feel like a kid in a sweet shop - so many watches - so little time.....

Wonderful news. Please post pictures of your new watch, with your impressions. The B&R is on my short (well, not that short any longer) list. Thanks!

Bit of confusion there - Roberts BR01 04 is an Asian 7760 MVT (which I presume is fine) and the U Boat is the 'Swiss' MVT. I was pretty impressed with Robert returning my email on new years day - top job. Unfortunatley he is not back in Bangkok until the 11th. I asked if he wanted me to pay now but he has not replied yet - probably having a drink like i will be in a mo.

My problem is I just cant wait to get my first rep - really looking forward to it. I was torn between the u boat and the B&R so in the end I thought I would just get both. I did see somebody asked Robert if he had seen any decent B&R reps and he said there were none but then found this batch which looks great to me and I would imagine that if he is selling them then they must be above average quality - good enough for me.

The min it arrives I will get some shots online - waho cant wait - hurry up 11th!
