Hi,

Really pleased (and surprised) to find fellow Kiwis on here!

Last month my girl friend's brother said he wanted a Daniel Wellington watch, so I offered to get him a replica as a gift. I bought one from aliexpress and it's actually quite good, my GF ended up with one as well.

I used to have some replica watches I bought from Vietnam and Thailand in 2002/2003, but I don't have them anymore. While hunting around on the internet for reviews on DW fakes I found this forum... After doing some research on here I'm quite keen on buying 1-2 high quality replicas. I'd like to buy

1. A gold dress watch. I've been eyeing up the IWC 5007 PR replica, it looks beautiful (pics below). However it seems they are lots of issues coming up in the IWC thread regarding 1. Finish quality 2. Problems with the movement. It seems that they all recommend a service as well (which is more difficult in NZ).

2. A good quality sapphire quartz or automatic (prefer quartz) Cartier Ballon Bleu for the girl friend.

I've also bought a couple of really cheap cartiers from aliexpress last week in the 11.11 sale. (I'll post pics when they arrive)

Q: What are people's thoughts on the IWC, do you think it's best to wait 3-6 months, what should I buy instead. Are there any really nice/similar styled sapphire quartz dress watches in gold / brown leather?

Looking forward to swapping stories with you guys, and I hope everyone is enjoying the primo weather today, we are just about to walk into town for some yum cha.

The earlier advice regarding watch smith recommendations is much appreciated. My Seiko kinetic Premier Perpetual Calander died about 2 months ago. I pulled the crown out to adjust the time and it came all the way out. I sent it back to Seiko in Auckland for repair + service and they charged me about $350 (Watch is only worth ~$700 online). It had sentimental value as the watch was about 12 years old, and I wear it almost everyday.

Some easy questions for someone to answer:

1. What is the typical amount charged on top of watch prices from TD for postage to NZ for 1x watch

2. What is the typical amount charged on top of watch prices from TD for postage to NZ for 2x watches

3. Will I expect to pay customs / gst charges on top of the watch? Do I need to remind the seller to undervalue the delivery?

Thanks
Mike

hey Mike.
welcome!

just a quicky before i go to bed,

all single postage charge is same no matter how many you order in a single package. 1 watch or 100 watches, they will charge $30.
but for your best interest, each package should not exceed 2. you don't want to spend hundred or thousands of dollars just to be confiscated at customs.

now that brings is to customs charge. Mike this is illegal. you won't be expected to pay import tax or customs charge. you will get your watch confiscated instead. lol
but don't worry too much. NZ custom is quite relaxed.

All our TD knows about customs issues so you don't need to remind them anything. just make sure you don't order anymore than 2-3 at a single time.

there is no such thing as goid quality sapphire quartz. quartz is not synonymous with quality. they are in fact at the bottom of the rep hierarchy.
so if you want to buy a watch that screams fake from miles away, stick to quartz, as chinese factory tend to make watch with quartz movement with very inaccurate aesthetics as well.

iwc is great, especially the latest 5007/5001. the movement issue has always been there for IWC but now domi has figured out how to fix it.

i could go on forever, but before i do that, just spend some time reading about each brand, types of movements, and also spend a lot of time at TD site comparing watches. That will give you some pretty solid idea how this rep world works. After that, pull trigger on a quality mechanical rep. not quarts.

Hi Mike and Pete,

There are some very good quartz Cartier reps available. Actually they are very close to the genuine watches in look and finish.

I bought my wife one about 6-8 months ago and she loves it.

Toro has ome nice ones or Angus at Puretime.

Expect to pay about $220-250us for a good one.

Thanks, I've read about domi's fix for sec@6 in a7750, but I wasn't confident that it was a definite fix. I'm not sure if it is possible to send a watch directly from the TD to Domi and then onto my self. It seems to add a fair amount of cost and risk to the purchase.

What's your opinion on this? Have you had the mod done?

I am aware that most of the reps are much better in non quartz form, but I read a couple of posts stating that there are a small number of highly finished reps in quartz. One of the tag chronos in quartz was mentioned to be good.

Thanks for the links chris9. Yes I've read that the quartz cartier are good quartz reps, as some of the gens are also quartz. I don't think my GF will appreciate the difference in the ticking of the hand between a quartz and a low beat and a hi beat, but she would appreciate her watch not requiring a service :D

Just bad eyesite. I am pretty old!

Textured dial is the way to go.

As to the question of 7750's..... I have had some really good ones and some duds on arrival. Getting them serviced will set you back about $350NZ and take about 2-3 months. Then you have the risk of the package getting lost, damaged, cought in Customs and the same thing when it is being sent back!

This hobby is like gambling, only use money you are happy to lose!

Never forget they are cheap quality, and not intended to last. No matter how good they may look

i never thought about functions on gen watches to be honest, unless i'm buying diver or aviator watch.
i mostly go with brand recognition and the design. that's it. ;-)

Can anyone recommend a rep. friendly watch smith here in Auckland? I looked up the guy in Henderson via Trademe and it looks like he has closed the business for good.
