One more point to add:
Don't buy watches for anyone else to notice, because 99.999% of the time the only other people that will notice are old men that are interested in watches themselves (That hot chick at the bar, nope not gonna notice and if it says rolex she'll probably think its fake).

I used to buy watches just for the hot women to notice, but my wife told me to quit it. :D

And if she DOES notice, then she's probably a DUDE and a fake herself ... lol

Yeah, your right. That's why I find it so hard to wear a rep Rolex. Whenever I see a rolex I think REP, whether it's the real deal or not, hell I don't know. There's just too many damn replicas out there. So there has to be other people out there who feel the same way. "If it says rolex it's a rep..." In my case they would be right, and I just can't stand that. I'm hoping my new ceramic GMT 2 will change my mind about Rolex replicas.

Down here in Naples Fl..........the idea of a Rolex being fake
is not really an issue. Most of these people can afford any type of watch they want.

I occupationally ride their coat tails 8)

All of the forum members and guys from big cities are hip to the knock off watch thing.
Generally people don't look for that outside of replica LV handbags (by the boat load).....etc.

This is my experience anyway..........you have to fit the profile for the watch to be believable........same issue with a 3 carat cubic in a platinum setting.

This is a very good thread, which can provide some valuable hints to anyone just starting out here.

Personally I am only in partial agreement with the statements made.

I think a good mix of cheap beaters and top reps suits me. I have a Breitling and a rolex which both cost me about $80. They are great, waterproof and look good enough.
I also have had a $300 Breitling and a $300 Rolex which were neither sturdy nor waterproof.

And I have some fairly expensive ones which I use when I really need to appreciate the watch. I do like these excellent reps, but not exclusively.

So the price/satisfaction ratio can be somewhat mixed.

Finally about quartz: I do have quartz. If you have several watches you will need some in your box just to tell what time it is, when the others have stoped. Also the quartz can be much better for daily use than the automatic. Just make sure that it is plausible. Good example is the IWC Portuguese chrono, where a quartz version openly says so on the dial. - And the automatic is pretty, but fairly useless.

I must have missed this the first time arround. Great post!
This should be pinned like Phoey's legendery RWG1 post "Thoughts on replica collecting" is at RWG2. Realy, it's that good. The only thing needing to be added is the bit about buying for yourself.

Funny, I missed it the first time around too! Some interesting points there. I'd say I agree with 80% of it...

There's a bit of a tension between point 1 (you will not be happy with the less accurate rep if you know there is a “better†version out there) and point 4 (don’t obsess about those minuscule flaws). Often it's exactly those miniscule flaws that make you desperate to find a better, more expensive version.

I don't buy reps to fool people, so point 2 leaves me completely cold (nobody’s going to believe it’s the real deal if you can’t play the part). Having said that, the other day I was on a train and the person next to me was wearing dirty jeans, muddy boots and an old shirt and jacket. Yet, he was wearing a beatiful Patek, and it was real. I know it's real because I recognised the guy: he's a billionaire venture capital investor. Looks can be deceptive, or at least not always a reliable indicator of spending power. And in any case, people should just wear whatever they like!

Anyway, nice post! Thanks for sharing your views.

You have no idea how true that statement is.... But then again, YOU wrote it so I guess you do!!

i had forgot all about this thread. customs will seize your watches. they took 4 from me and had no problems sending a lot of certified threatening mail to my house along with gef.

also the cars, clothes and general appearance thing. people may think about that crap in new york city but trust me, it holds no water at all. if you think like that where i live you will be seriously misled. this weekend i will post a picture of my old truck and all of our genuine rolex's. lmao

There's a good book out there (old... but good)

called "the millionaire next door"

tis why you can't judge someone on appearances, cars and such alone.

might have really nice things,.. but living paycheck to paycheck hoping nothing goes wrong or their royally screwed.

I hope your wrong on a few points like I will not be happy with my $120 reps :)

And you should not say Done Fear Customs.. Do give them the respect they are due and hope for the best.....

Also about the ETAs I thought I read they are all pretty much fakes...
My plan is to buy my own ETAs and install them if this cheap 21j movements start to crap out..

Thanks for the taking the time of writing and letting me know what I might be in for :)

Well this is a blast from the past. Still collecting, still no customs issues.
I've even had one of my boxes opened by customs. The repacked it and sent it on! Lucky I guess...

So, I assume I'm the rooter? Where I come from that's actually quite the compliment. ;)
Anyway, you know, I ride a bicycle too... How's that for proletarian?
