May I inquire the Connoisseurs please: 15400 or 15202 ?

The watch industry can’t make a living of purists only, unlike what many of us would like to believe. By offering some variation, aimed at a larger target audience, there is something for everyone. That’s how I see these two different references.

The person who’s really deep into watches will probably go for the Royal Oak 15202

The guy (or girl) who simply loves watches, and happens to like the octagonal design of the Royal Oak might be drawn to the reference 15400. It is bigger and has a modern design

For those who just love the serenity of just an hour and minute hand, prefer the “Petite Tapisserie” and simply prefer a smaller and thinner watch, there’s the 15202.

I was about to order the new zf 15400 but came across the thread on the xf 15202 . I know those are 1st problems but I am genuinely undecided and I also apply a strict limited rep numbers policy. Having both the 15400 and 15202 would be redundant imo.

so here I am once again counting on the connoisseurs among us to kindly advise me on which one to go for...

I am drawn to the 15202 as it has a more iconic vibes along a more mature presence. Maybe I just answered my own question but nevertheless would live to hear your thoughts

Many thanks and kind regards,

Fire

I have an 8 inch wrist circumference. Will the 15400 zf fit or will it be too tight?

I like watches around 42mm to suit my near 8” wrist. I have had both, and fleetingly a gen 15400, and in my opinion the 15400 is too big! The 15202 at 39mm is the perfect size for the AP RO, and 42mm for the AP ROO.
Just my personal slant on it.

Unfortunately, it is not really a matter of what you like but more a matter of what you can wear sizewise...
Royal oaks are big watches (lug to lug dimensions) and the 15400 is wearing more like a 43-44mm watch from any other brand.
The 15202 wears bigger than a submariner or a nautilus for example bur is thinner so ....
normally you won't have choice, your body will decide for you, unless you are not afraid to look ridiculous with a watch that might look too big or too small for your wrist.
my 2 cts....

ps: Also keep in mind that ROs are nicer on flat wrist than on round onces...

Well I will respectfully disagree on your points. But many thanks for chiming in ;)

I’d just just order them all, whatever you don’t like you can easily flip it in m2m here, losing only shipping cost and probably few more tens. It’s not worth it to think much when you can easily try. You will never know for sure if you haven’t tried both anyway.

If you can live with the mismatching dial and hands lume on the 15202, then by all means

Is it that bad ?

No. It is majorly overblown on zoomed in magnified photos. The hour markers are so thin that the color of the lume is hardly noticeable.

On the PPF Nautilus for example, the green lume is much more noticeable due to the fatter hour markers...

A "much bigger" issue on the 15202 is the fat hourhand sorrundings

Where I need to be.
Good topic, thank you fire007
Personally I prefer a 15400 because of the contemporary look and caliber. I can understand why a 15202 is the flagship RO for AP but it is flimsy to handle and operate and a rather delicate watch, and this will not suit my lifestyle.

Agree totally,

The 15202 is classic but the 15400 is an evolutionary progression, as is the 15500.

Having 15202 and 15400 would not be redundant if you are an AP lover. The look and feel is quite different. 15202 is more of a dress watch while the 15400 is decidedly a sport watch. A 15400 and 15500 would be more redundant.

I feel the 15202 XF is leagues beyond what was previously available but I might wait personally.

The 15400 ZF is almost excellent as is (I have minor complaints about the bracelet finishing).

For me having a more refined 15202 and a decent 15500 rep would be an ideal combination. I’d love to own a gen 15202 if I could, and I might own a gen 15500 some day. The 15400 ZF makes it probably makes gen ownership less exciting— sorry AP, but that’s why you had to do what you did with the 15500. You saw this day coming just like the rest of us.
