Where I need to be.
Simply because no one buys his BS
To be fair to @mike1967 there is nothing wrong with sharing about improvements or mods done to reps in various ways. This is in fact a large part of what the forum is about. His work also isn't that bad, and if the refinishing work is graded a 6.5/10, it is only a 1.5 point worse than the best batch of APSF/ZF reps (which I will rate 6/10 - 8/10 depending on the specific batch), and 0.5 better than the worst batch. You don't see for example the loss of crisp edges in the factory APSF and ZF watches, which are evident in some of the watches shown by the OP. But it is ok showcasing one's passion, as no rule here mentions that you need actual talent to qualify to start such threads.

But to make spurious and exaggerated claims about replica APs looking gen with just the surface refinishing done, shows utter ignorance with regards to what rep (and gen) APs are about.
And to further claim that the watches he was holding are gens, just to contend with the remark that the refinished watches can still be called out as reps, was nothing short of childish and of course, plain deceitful. If OP has gen APs, he would have already shown them side by side instead of going to the AD to make comparisons. He came across as the type to ensure that the world knows about the $10 he has in the safe, even if what he actually has in reality is just $1 in the pocket.

I'm waiting for OP to return and tell me that I am wrong about the watches in his pics (all save one grey 15510 which he does not own) being reps.
I am happy to be wrong if we can all learn something new, like how AP now is in the habit of producing watches which look exactly like replicas to keep us all safe from muggers.

Walmart still sells freedom seeds??? The Walmarts near me banned ammo for the past 5 years now.

But serious question. Why is it frowned upon to go into the AD with a rep on? Is it just because we don't want to bring attention to our community or? I would never do it because with my luck they'd ban me for life from entering again but genuinely curious as to why.

I won't speak to other people and the forum's constitution/rules but in my eyes it's simply bad taste.

What is there to prove by wearing a replica to an AD? That you have money? That the sales staff at ADs can't tell replicas apart from gens on wrist? That it's fun? Most of the reasons come down to ego, there is nothing good that can come from it.

I see. And I agree. To be fair I can tell a rep on someone walking down 50 meters from me a the mall. Gen watches just have something about them that the rep's don't have, unless you're spending $$$ to mod them to the point where only the movement is not genuine.

Really? Wow.
That might've been a little exaggerated on my end, but typically here in NY and in Boston I see about 100 people a day wearing an AP or a Rolex at the local Starbucks or Chipotle. I can spot a rep and a gen every time because of the way the crystals shine or the AR the gen/rep produces. I understand some would be super hard to tell, but generally I can

Can you throw a football a quarter of a mile too Uncle Rico? Come on man.

Surely there’s also a disease from this hobby that causes people to be overly suspicious of watches too? Because there’s absolutely 0% chance that you can scout that at 50m through varying light conditions etc.

As I said in my previous reply I was exaggerating. I was talking more so from the AD standpoint, where they work with Gen watches all day every day, as their career, would be able to tell a rep from a Gen.

When my brother got home from his trip from Turkey he smiled and said he bought a Rolex Submariner over there (he knew it was a rep, bought it from some store selling fakes)

I instantly knew it was a rep from the way the crystal didn't have the same shine a gen did from the crystal. Might've been a bad/cheap rep, but I could still tell from standing 2 meters away from him.

I totally agree with some models/factory outputs it’s obvious. It was just a pretty big statement lol.

I 100% agree with Tony and the others that the “can they spot it” game is childish bullshit. Best case a watch you know is a copy gets unnoticed and you prove nothing. Worst case you create a scenario that someone gets embarrassed by. I’m more than understanding it you walk down the street and see a watch you love and you nip in to have a look as a random happenstance. Not that you can’t just take the watch off and leave it in your pocket too before you go in. But the idea of intentionally “testing” ADs? 99% of us here probably would agree it’s a 0 reward situation so why do it?
