I think Rolex has lost appeal (as a brand) a bit among the WIS and the watch hobbyists during the last few years. But they have maintained their #1 status among the general people. Average people still think they are the "best". I'm surprised that TAG Heuer has awesome reputation among non-watch people too... although WIS almost despise them. (personally I have always loved the TAG design). Rolex has always done their advertising very well... and built their prestige through it. TAG's formula has been very similar.

But here in Europe Rolex has also a bit "parvenu" or upstart reputation. People who come from "old money" would never wear a Rolex. They're considered tasteless.

Rolex is also synonymous to "fake" to almost everybody I know... or at least "potential fake". And for good reason. I read from somewhere that there are 11 fakes for 1 genuine Rolex watches out there. Wonder what the ratio is among Daytonas? ;)

I love the Rolex sports line, but it's really hard to get very excited about them after you've had a Breitling Steelfish Superocean or 45mm Planet Ocean on your wrist. But then again GMT Master, Submariner and Daytona are timeless classics.

My dad buys only Rolex (he has 3 gens) and Mercedes cars. For him there are no other brands. Great stuff, but you gotta admit it's a bit unimaginative and apathetic. :)

you only have to see the presidential band on a day date to know what it is and i don't know of another watch that you can do that with. rolex is the most replacated watch in the world because of the status of it's customers. there is no other watch brand in the world that say's (i got money) like a rolex. 99% of the people in the world see a 100,000.00 patek and would just think it came from wal-mart. i would hardly call a reputation like that unimaginative and apathetic.

i would say rolex is 100% on top of their game. luxury time peices is their game, not fashion watches.

just for the record i am a rolex man as a rule but with that being said i have been in aviation all of my life, combined with the fact i love a flashy watch i am a breitling fan and it would be a tough decision for me if i only had 5,000.00 to spend for 1 gen watch.

True. That's exactly why some people consider them tasteless.

99% of the people in the world see a 100,000.00 patek and would just think it came from wal-mart.

I think people who buy 100K Pateks don't really care. They usually don't have to.

you don't think that people with 60,000.00 worth of diamonds on their platinum day date care if you like it do you?

No...you're absolutely correct. Bad taste usually doesn't have a price tag... or self-awareness. Unless it's camp. :)

That's my sentiments exactly By-Tor, Rolex's are in general for people who Know little or nothing about watches and just want it as a status symbol,"He He I've got a rolex, cuz I've got money!" Who cares?

I wear a Davidsen 218a pvd and almost none notices the occasional enthusiast will in passing say,
"Hey, nice watch."

I don't wear watches for anybody elses pleasure but my own.

I sold my rep rollie after seeing that even a gen in hand is not all that impressive.
Unless you are trying to attract attention to yourself to boost your ego I don't see the point.

Edit:

Nobody really cares how much money someone else has,
It's not like they are gone give it away, So what am I supposed to be envious of a 10k watch?

Nobody look's at some one riding a Fully Loaded Harley and says wow they must be loaded, Yet Harley's can run upwards of 40K.

because it is human nature to want what is perceived to be the best and that is rolex for most of the people in the world. that is why they are and will continue to be the most famous and popular luxury watch in the world.

as far as saying i've got money being tastless? i suppose it is ok to drive a bently as long as you wear an omega or a tag?

I guess it depends on if your driving a Bentley because it is one of the best all around Luxury and sport's car manufacturers in the world. or if it's beacuse you are trying to say "how cool am I? I have a Bentley!"

No. I personally don't think Rolex are tasteless at all. The whole sports line is timeless... and I don't have anything against people who wear bling watches, either. To each their own.

I was just trying describe what the image of Rolex wearers in Europe is (more or less). Don't shoot the messenger. ;)

It's more important to me to know I have what is IMO the best, whether anybody else notices or not. :)

nobody drives a bently because it the best luxury or sports car in the world because it's not.

what we are talking about here is how consevative a person is. the fact is that you can drive a chevrolet cavalier and wear a timex and they will transport you and tell time just as well as a rolex and a bently.

rolex is the best selling luxury watch in the world because the it is what the biggest part of luxury watch buyers want.

I look at watches the way I look at cars for fit, finish and overal perfomance.

Now on these parts rolex has very good quality control and meet's and exeeds the expectation.

As with cars the market evolves, Mercedes one of the oldest car manufacturers has kept up and is at the top of their game with their product line, yet still they offer a more classic line.

Rolex set the bar for Quality and reliability, Once way back when.

Now when are they going to evolve, instead of revolve.

As for leading the way in watch manufacturing they are falling waaaay behind.

Brands Like Zenith, Hublot and Audemars Piguet are setting that bar to high for rolex to even approch it at this point.

So on the point of buying a rolex becuase they are a good watch I do agree with you.

Buying anything so someone else besides yourself will notice, why?

It shouldn't matter how others perceive you.

How long before they do a supersubmariner?

A bigger divers watch would get them plenty of attention from a new crowd.

I don't do Rolex, even if I wore a gen, I would look like I stole it .

well as far as how others perceive you? you are absolutly correct. it shoudn't matter, but it does, unfortunatly it is the world we live in.

as far as a benz and quality? their cars have turned into warrantee nightmares because of terrible quality control and cost cutting measures at their supplier level.

Rolex & Coca-Cola

Could you imagine Coca-Cola changing its taste just because it's been the same for years? NO!!! So it's the same with Rolex... I fully agree that they prefer "evolution" rather than "revolution". The result surely won't worth the risk of loosing 70% of coke sales in the world (or even more?).

From business point of view (and they sale watches) they're doing great. You want a XXL watch? Buy a Panerai, a Breitling...

Rolex and Coca-Cole have got the greatest success you can get when dealing with a brand: The type of article and the brand have gotten mixed, and when you talk about cola, you say Coca-Cola... Rolex is not much but not so far.

Then, why change?: Change everything to keep things unchanged (not, mine but I like this phrase).

I think the point being that if Rolex combined some of the brand prestige and huge popularity as the "I've got money" watch with a bigger case size, they would most certainly steal away some of the Breitling/Omega/Panerai buyers.

Show me a wealthy, successful company that doesn't want more wealth and success and I'll show you a bunch of liars.
