Is it true that replicas eventually lead to genuine watch buy?

Done the opposite for me.. Started with a gen Daytona, 2 gen submariner ( 16613lb & 14060 ) and a gen Breitling.. Now I have the Daytona and the Breitling, and 40 something reps 😉

I started my watch journey with only gens. A few vintage Omegas, a proper Speedy, and a Grand Seiko Shunbun. Then I found the world of reps and it shifted my collecting philosophy completely.

If reps COULD be at the level of CF RLX productions, because let's be honest CF makes some damn good RLX reps, then any gens I get should be something that reps just can't do. (Think something like GS and their Spring Drive mechanism). Reps got me to think more about why I like watches, what makes me like a watch, and made me be more picky about what I buy in gen.

Sure when I wear reps, I get the little voice in the back of my head that says "gen is gen", but as many have stated in this thread, at least I didn't pay the price of a gen. I use my money to create new experiences IRL, fund my ski addiction, or just set it aside to buy a grail watch that reps can't make. I'm looking at you ALS😭

Like most of us I own both reps and gens. Love wearing both. While I think we can all agree that " gen is gen", I do not get 10-50x the enjoyment out of a gen watch that's 10-50x the price. I just don't.

I love my gens and will continue to buy more- but the delta on the enjoyment factor between the two camps are not terribly wide for me. I love my reps!

Like Pinion Minion above, I don't get multiple times the enjoyment out of wearing a gen compared to a quality rep. For instance, I just purchased a Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph from 8f, with a gen used market price of about $34,000. After wearing this rep I would consider this watch a NWBIG. I too love my reps.

My rep journey led me to vintage rolex. I surely wouldn't have bought them as gens. Prices of the models I like are insane, cost of service is insane. AD once quoted me 3k for servicing a 1030! And those 70 years old movements are quite delicate. I don't want to build a museum collection, but wear my watches.

And then there are the modern ones. I can't justify spending money on a gen when the reps are that good.

Only gens I consider buying are those without decent rep or rep at all. E.g. Speedy FOIS, or the IWC Mark XII.
