I buy reps so I can spend thousands of dollars buying lottery tickets :!:
Hope everyone is staying warm today and snuggling up close to their watches, oh yes and loved ones...

I like the fun of sourcing and modding the parts and the final product.
All of my keeper reps are Franken projects.

So true 007, the trill is in the hunt. Even when you find the prey, you want to hunt more! :)

I didn't take any offense in your comments. I guess PF just had a bowl of shit soup and had a bad taste in his mouth. Anywayy.... If I could afford a slew of Pams , Breitlings, Girard Perregauxs, Ulysse Nardin, etc, I'd buy them all and be loving it and I wouldn't look back. The most expensive Gen I have is $1200.00 and in all I have about $8000.00 invested in gen watches. I just really love watches. So the reason I have been buying reps is that I came apon this site and realized that there are some very high quality reps being made vs the old pieces of crap that I bought over the years. So damn, I can have some pretty cool looking watches and have a lot of enjoyment wearing them. In reality you have to go to a lot of effort and with great patience to get one of these reps to a point where you are completely satisfyed with it. So from that side of it there is a real pride of ownership when you've got one "just right". In that case you'll probably feel that it is as good as a gen. Also very very few people are in to qualilt watches and most don't have a clue what your wearing or even care. Most would think anybody paying over $1000.00 for watch is got to be out of his miind. So then, we all are somewhat "Special" in that we really get off on watches, rep or gen.

@Mojua....I'm a man of wealth and taste. Pleased to meet you. Won't you guess my name?

Well, it's efnstefn (aka Stefan), and my apologies to the Glimmer Twins for use of their lyrics above. Let me say this, my reputation precedes me as a lover of fine wines, GT class cars, exquisite homes in daring locations, Saville Row tailored clothing, and both gen and rep watches...among other things. Oh, I also am a collector of wives who make signficant money in order to support my habits and hobbies.

LOL........OK, half of that is true, but you have to guess which half.

Anyway, 50% of the watches in my collection are reps and, after much soul searching on the subject (look at some of my posts re: conflict with the old lady over reps), I've determined that I'm into this damn rep hobby because I like this forum and the people who make it a community. IMO, the members of gen forums are arrogant pricks who just love to wear a symbol of their net worth on their wrist. IMO, the people on RWI are much more genuine about their love of timepieces and knowledgable about the timepieces themselves.

I wouldn't consider myself ANYTHING like some of the posters at Paniristi or TZ, but I do have a TZ handle as I tend to read their forums and I've posted a pic or two of my gen there.

Again, I could give a shit if a watch is gen or rep. I'd prefer to own gens myself, but I just LOVE watches and until I can afford to purchase all gens - there will be a rep or two in my watchbox. EVEN AFTER I can afford all gens, there may be a rep or two left over after I clean out my watchbox because I love them so much. :D

contact through email :)

just remember that reps take a wee bit of patience to deal with - it's not like buying a gen at a macy's.

Lets inject a little common sense in here . having a money manager for a brother,i can assure you he would never sugest its ok to spend 9000$ on a fiddy. the mantra of an money manager is "capitol preservation" i loaned a dear friend 3000$ out of my income , not my money market account :) and it pinched for 3 months. he just payed it back , so i have new money for a gen watch . will i buy 1? hell no!!!!!!!! 2000 goes to beef up the MM account and i buy a rep 3646 and a new puter with the rest . conspicuous consumers are just that! LOL

;0 now he is paying me back

Hey all,

I just sent the following as a PM to a fellow member of this board, but would love to hear your 'philosophical' thoughts as well, on a point I’ve been battling with over the past few weeks – since I don’t even own a rep yet (only a Gen 111i);

Isn’t there something intrinsically powerful / invaluable about owning a gen and knowing it’s a gen…not for anyone else’s sake, but just because?!?!…I've been reading all these posts from people who are like, ‘I can afford a gen if I want to, but I don’t think they’re worth it, so I stick with reps.’ That sentiment, although believable, seems a bit shortsighted to me…it’s like being able to afford a ’65 Shelby Cobra, but getting this; http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cobra_W0 ... dZViewItem instead, because the real thing’s ‘not worth it’…no matter how good it looks or how well it drives, it’s NOT real, and being real is what makes the real thing worth it…or what about an original piece of art vs. a copy/print, or a mined diamond vs. a cultured/grown diamond, or seeing Pink Floyd in concert vs. seeing a Pink Floyd cover band in concert…in each case, both products/pieces/experiences serve a purpose and have a value, but there’s a fundamental difference…

Regardless of how much it cost to build, or how high/low end the individual parts are…the combined effort, and history, and design, and community of Panerai, are what makes a PAM a PAM…

I’m gonna get a David Fiddy because it’ll fulfill an otherwise unattainable dream of mine…I can’t afford a real one, and it's been a grail watch of mine for years…to that end, I am supremely appreciative of / grateful for the fact that there are fantastic dealers out there like David who offer a great product, and I'm thankful that I've found such an awesome community/resource here to talk with and learn from. In the end of the day though, if I could TRULY afford and appreciate the original of anything, the idea of getting a ‘rep’ would never even cross my mind…

What do you guys think? I guess more than anything, I wonder what inspires each of us to seek out / covet / enjoy reps?

Hey man welcome to the board. Make yourself at home here you are more than welcome here. Take it from a crazy Texan dont let anyone here run you off or get the best of you. Not all of us are angry at your post infact i actually understand exactly what you are saying. I have already discussed the davidsen fiddy with you in private. this watch will be the love of your heart believe me. when you get it you will be shocked at how well it is built. No one i mean no one can tell its fake unless they see the back and see the serial number. I know whenb you get it your other watches will not see daylight. Infact get two, that way you can wear one and save the other as a show piece thats what i am doing. also be sure to request the E movement when ordering the fiddy from davidsen. Good luck my friend and welcome to the darkside.
