Okay, but where did you get those tools? You got them all through your own goodness and your hard work? Or could God have given them to you? What if He gave you every molecule of that body you're so proud of? Down to your extravagant penis size?
The fact of it is that you'd have to be pretty arrogant to deny the presence of SOME kind of God. You think about how complex our world and our bodies are, and you think that it could just have come together this way by chance? Someone put it together, no matter what name you give Him. If you want to believe that He put you together and then tossed you out the door and forgot all about you, you can. But maybe he put you together and wants you to love Him, and maybe He made you put out that opening post.
But wow, I hope He encourages you to change that new sig of yours. That's just creepy.

I'm late to this. My suggestion, if you have those kinds of questions Pec, is to read a book by Richard Dawkins called The God Delusion. And then after that read a book called The Dawkins Delusion, by Alister McGrath. Then make up your own mind. You won't regret it.

One thing that irritates me is that people praise God for little positive things in their life ("Thank you, God, for helping me get an "A" on the test", "Thank you, God, for letting us buy that house", ect.), but they say it's "God's will" when bad things happen, or say that God doesn't always answer every prayer.
If you think that God is helping you with your test/race/purchase/common cold, but He won't help people starving to death, dying of diseases, who's children die, ect you believe in a God I don't have any reason to praise. It's extraordinarily vain to believe that your minor issues are more important than someone else's life or death situation.
People say "God doesn't have time for every prayer". That's ludicrous, because He would exist in a place outside of time, where it has no effect on anything.
Most modern day Christians have lost all sense of humbleness and humility that is suppose to be a staple of the religion.
Before you ask, I am a spiritual man. But a lot of people these days have forgotten the core of religion, and treat it more like a "Boy's club", where you have to follow their rules to be a member, when God's rules are the only ones that matter. Just people imposing their own beliefs on others through the guise of faith.

Gods rules are the only ones that count - agree fully.
And we are to praise God in ALL things - not just the good ones.
God isn't always trying to help us, but he IS always trying to perfect us. Sometimes iron sharpening iron may ultimately destroy one of the pieces of iron. Going through the refiner's fire will never be a pleasant experience, and we will certainly ask why a loving God would put us or others through that fire.
He knows the answer. We do not.
Ultimately, if you don't believe then you don't believe. But why do so many non-believers have such anger and animosity toward those who believe? Have you ever asked yourself where that comes from? An unfulfilled need deep within perhaps? A soul knowing that something is missing?
Certainly many bad things have been done throughout history in the name of Christianity - as with all religions. Man's bastardization of God's rules has and always will be a major problem. But can anyone argue that the world would truly be a better place without faith or knowledge of God?

+1 Roger, exactly what I mean. Way too many people are all too happy to say "God helped me pass my driver's test", and when something bad happens to someone ELSE they say "It was her time, He just wanted her up there with him". But, when something bad happens to them, themselves they question, and ask "Why would You do this to me?". If you're going to praise, and worship don't be fickle about when you believe He's worthy of it. Just a lot of hypocrisy. (This isn't directed at you Roger, just expounding on my point from earlier).
I don't believe God takes souls to Heaven because it's their time. Our souls reside in a fragile shell, and sometimes they only last a second or so after birth, sometimes they last 110 years. Some people experience a lifetime of atrocities before they're 6 years old, some people live a charmed life. There's no way to measure when a person's been through enough hardship to be "ready for Heaven". If there is a vetting process it's completely biased towards the sick, and impoverished.
Once again, I'm ranting.

Sadly there is a thing called "American Chrisitianity." Vote republican, have two cars in the garage, big house, a 401K, and maybe go to church on Christmas and Easter. Don't get me wrong, there are many good stewards of the faith, but there are plenty of false teachers, prosperity doctrines and the likes, none of whom seem to be denying themselves. Sadly, this is who most non-believers see and get there opinions of what a Christian is.
Pec, you need to not look at people, rather, look inside yourself and if you are truly, humbly, and honestly searching for God, then He will show himself to you. Get away by yourself for a weekend, go up into the mountains with no one around. Clear that head of yours and earnestly give it a try, you just might be surprised at the outcome. Many ignore the struggle, some deny it, but in any case there is a battle raging for you. Thankfully, it's a battle that you can win.
Hang tough my friend and all the best to you.

Forgot to mention: I think you can also get audiobook copies of these. So if you don't have the time to read, just listen to it in your car, on the iPod or whatever. You can also get rep copies (i.e., look for the torrents
). But yeah, it's highly recommended reading...

Pec, in many ways you are correct. The bible says "it is harder for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to inherit the kingdom of God".
They "eye of the needle" was actually a very narrow, low city gate in Israel. The wealthy merchants had to completely dismantle their camels of all their wares to pass through... It was a pain in the ass to say the least.
Those of us that are lucky enough to have enough expendable income to afford watches & houses lose sight of God because we don't rely on him to live from day to day. We don't "need him", @ least in respect to our health & wealth. We are wealthy & blinded.
Ultimately, God is love, he helps those that help themselves, & his purpose will never be fully understood by us.
I don't know why God allows suffering, & poverty, & war. No matter how long o try to understand it will always be a mystery.
I do know though that if God is love, then I should show love to others. I should try everyday to make people feel loved, & to make someone's life better. That is how a Christian should be. Christianity is not about attending church once a week & following a long ass list of rules, but about having a relationship with God, & spreading love to the world.
I can see that through the things you are writing that you are not debating, but that you are genuinely in turmoil. Know this, I love you, & God loves you. **** the Christians that are fakes. **** the Christians that are judgemental assholes. They give all of us a bad name, & I apologize for them.
God is there, you just have to want Him more than all the other shit in life. It's tough for those of us that are "wealthy" in finances.
