Hey guys I would like to buy a Rolex Submariner in Bangkok

and I would like to know how to recognize if the Rolex Submariner has real ETA or some chinese junk in it.

He will certainly have to show me the inside of the watch right?

I would be very grateful for any help ;)

No BKK dealer is going to show you the inside mate, he'll simply tell you to leave.
There are very few good sellers in BKK anyway and all are expensive. You are better buying one from the dealers here TBH.

Sorry mate. Been there. They, like other regional markets, won't open them.

Stupid question.

Isnt it better than to buy a battery Rolex instead wasting a lot of money for fake eta not running accurately?

Are there high quality battery Rolex with sapphire glas?

I want to buy it in Thailand and not TD :)

So if I want to buy a watch in Bangkok how can I recognize its good quality, not spending more than 120$?

Because I bought a Rolex Sub in Russia and after 2 days it was starting running bad (Not accurately).

You are great guys!

Well, "better" is relative - if you mean in absolute terms of accurate time keeping, then yes - for everything else, no.

Even those who couldn't tell a mechanical watch from a quartz watch from a sundial seem to maintain that the second hand sweep of a mechanical movement is a "signature" of a Rolex. While this we all know this is incorrect, it's a signature of all mechanical time pieces, it serves to say that a quartz Rolex will scream "fake" from a mile away - even to those who otherwise wouldn't have the first clue where to start looking.

The Asian clone movements are perfectly serviceable, but if you're really dead set on a genuine ETA movement, plenty of TDs offer them as well (or you could buy one from Ofrei and install it yourself). You're taking arguably a bigger risk buying from a local market, and the chances are very slim that you'll get anything close to a genuine ETA anyway, even if that's what you're told.

There are higher quality Rolex reps with sapphire crystals, most high end reps come standard with them. Again, plenty available from the TDs, why the reluctance to shop at the one place where the products are basically guaranteed to be exactly what you paid for?

edit: For $120, you're most likely looking at 21J reps. The ETA movement alone costs more than that. You could always look into vintage pieces where 6 bpm is more realistic to the gen though (I think, by no means an expert on rolles).

It is better to spend your money on boobs and booze in bkk rather than watches.

Thx man.

So how much do I need to spend on a good Asian clone watch in Bangkok? Its for a friend and he really wants a watch from there. I heard the 21J are not running very accurately

Mate, there is no way you will buy an ETA Sub for 120 dollars. That's what a 21j rep costs. I think you need to do a lot of reading as you have much to learn. For starters there is nothing wrong with an Asian clone movement not that you will buy one of those for 120 either.

You have been given advice by those who know best and the advice is don't buy in BKK as you will end up with crap. If I were you I would take the advice and buy from a TD. I don't quite understand why you would want to buy from some unknown seller in BKK instead.

Is there some sentimental reason he needs a watch from BKK specifically? Because 99% of their stock comes from the same place as all the other reps, China.

edit: You keep saying things aren't running accurately, could you define "accurate" for us? Because I have an unserviced (clearly) 21J beater on my wrist right now and it's kept a consistent rate of +14 seconds a day for about a year now. It could use a bit of proper regulation, but it's not certainly not fluctuating wildly from day to day.

I noticed you mentioned a rep you bought that went south on you in a matter of days, so do you mean dependably, or accurately? Dud watches happen no matter where you get them from, at least when you buy from a TD you have the opportunity to send it back for an exchange or repair. I doubt the local guy at the market will do the same.

I dont know but he really wants it from Bangkok. Unfortunately i cant get him some boobs from there ^^

So I will look for 21J.

Is Nah Piek still the place to go in Bangkok? Where in MBK to find good 21j watches in 3rd floor or ground floor?
What other places are reliable?

Thx guys.

  1. What about MT Watches, Boss Time and Home Watches in MBK? Or other recommendations
  2. When I go there should I ask immediatelly for J21 Rolex Sub or wait what he says and offers. Whats the best tactic?
  3. Is it possible to get a good ETA clone for 150$ or is it fake? I heard they are better than J21
