I've had this dilemma myself and views vary greatly. Really 2 camps on this one. Each have their own valid view.
Personally I disagree with the "it's a rep buy gen" sentiment. I own gen, and have had problems with and rejected them to. Gen's aren't the ticket to perfection you might be sold. Anyone who thinks gens are perfect spends too much time on the internet and not enough time owning them. 20 watches, half gen half rep. One of my *best* is a rep. One of my worst is a gen. A good watch is a good watch. All need servicing and some even run pretty good afterwards.
Panerai replaced my $13k watch twice due to serious movement issues and now it's on a 3-6 month vacation again. Like all things sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. Go to the paneristi forums and you will soon learn it's not a one off case. I miss that watch :/
My view is it depends on the cost of the watch. Circa $200... Yeah I'm happy to live with flaws, it's a cheap watch. Weak lume, wrong font... Yeah.. you get that... When we are talking the $500+ ones though... Yeah I'm not buying the 700% Mark up crap. Paid pennies? Probably but that isnt reflected in what im paying and that money is going somewhere.. $500 buys many a nicely made swiss watch... Hamilton? Tissot? which strangely enough the dial will be straight on... and if not, I'd reject that one too.
QC needs to exist to some extent... it is helping the great makers get a well deserved good reputation. Most of these reps are sold as and priced as "not your canal street crap". If that's the case, and at 200-500% above canal street / Alibaba prices they need to be ok... if there are factories (and I suspect there is at least 1....) Who are currently selling sub par stuff wouldn't it be best if that was called out?
