I would say it depends upon the person giving the complement. I would want to know the specifics of the situation, but by in large I just say thanks. Ironically most of my nicer reps do not draw the compliments, it is usually the common ones. Most people have never heard of most of the higher end gens out there, Rolex may be the only one they know, besides Movado.

got called out the weekend, wearing my gen SA with diamond bezel, so go figure , i just replied yes mate you must be a watch expert, WANKER!!!!!!!!

A friend of mine (his name is BMECliq) had a problem with someone calling him out once. From then on, he took another member's advice (let's call him davebs) and addressed the issue hands on whenever approached by someone interested in his rep:

"Well I know Muai Tai, Brazillian Ju Jitzu, and a little thing I like to call "i nailed your mom". I'm so bad ass, there isn't one little kid in any of my karate classes that even wants to spar with me cause i UNLEASH THE FURY! Yeah I've got a small penis and nobody likes me, but I drive a porsche worth more than your LIFE so **** you! Like the other day, I was walking down the street and this little old lady told me she liked my watch, so I said, "What **** you! It's not fake!" So I went into karate mode and SCISSOR KICKED HER IN THE FACE! *WHAM BAM* Then I pulled her up by her hair but her wig came off, turns out she was bald! *GROSS* ******* old people. Then I picked her up by the ears and kneed her in the face muai tai style! *BLADOW* And I was like "That's what you get for walking so slow bitch! AND THERE'S NO WAY YOU COULD KNOW MY WATCH IS FAKE, CAUSE IT'S NOT, IT'S A MODDED MBW SUPER DUPER ULTIMATE SUB, AND IT'S REAL! REAL I SAY! IT USES THE SAME MOVEMENT MOST REAL WATCHES DO ANYWAY, IT'S SWISS ETA, IT'S A DIVISION OF SWATCH, PLUS I BOUGHT IT FOR A GOOD VALUE, NOT CAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD A REAL ONE CAUSE I SPENT ALL MY MONEY ON KARATE CLASSES, SO **** YOU! OH, AND I DRIVE A PORSCHE WORTH MORE THAN YOUR GRANDCHILDREN!" *KAZAAM* Yeah, I showed her what's what. That's the last time she'll be calling me out on my watch. But I gtg, I'm late for yoga class WHERE I PICK UP CHICKS LIKE YOUR MOM! AMERICA!!! **** YEAH!!!"

:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:

If it's a good friend/somebody i hang out with and they complement it i say: "Thanks, would you believe me if i told you it was a replica?" Then indulge them with a little more information, because they are almost always intrigued. I normally ony do this with the Rollies, because those are the ones people notice.

Others, i say, Thanks i love it.

I have been asked once by someone i didn't care to reveal that it wasn't Gen, how much i paid of it, (which i find very tacky in itself, but I'm sure we all know people like this guy) I said i got a great deal on it used, on a watch forum(which is the gods honest truth)

All in all, i think its gotta be a case by case bases

Never been called out before but I spent many years in Corporate America and now I own my own business. I have gens and reps so those who know me don't ask. They assume its real because I can afford either one (rep or gen) if I wanted to.

I think it comes down to who you are and how you carry yourself. It's probably very vain to say it but, If you can afford a gen, then most people won't ask you. They assume. If everyone assumes you can't, then you'll get challenged.

I have friends who are multi-millionaires and they live very modest. They could afford anything they want but choose to be low key. They get challenged all the time from ignorant people who are judgmental. They get challenged for not wearing a Rolex or driving a Ferrari. It's crazy. If people only knew that these people choose not to have flashy items like cars and watches.

Personally I believe it it's rude for anyone to ask if your watch is real or not. Just face it, we have assholes in this world that just want to be pricks. In my network, you never call out a someone because you don't know who that someone may be. Sort of like the quote from the movie Training Day. "the somebody that Allonzo beat to death at that casino turned out to be a somebody".

I don't care if you can or can't afford the gen. It's bad karma to rain on someone's parade or call them out. What do you gain from that other than a good old fashion ass whopping or embarrassed or even to find out that the person you called out is now your new boss. So what if it's real or not? Who Cares? Just compliment them on having great taste in watches and move on. Most people think its fake anyway so why entertain them.

So, in short I just say "thanks" and move on. If they want to know where I got it, i tell them from "Dealer and it wasnt cheap". Most people know how much a Rolex cost, so why ask me? "Too much" is the other response to the price question. Also, if you ask me how muh i paid 9 times out of 10 you probably can't afford one anyway?

Asking me if it's real or not isnt the best way to break the ice IMO.

Very well stated Tagman. I think I was just overly worried about being called out since I am fairly new to reps. But most ppl, who know me, wuld probably assume it's real unless I wear a different one every day. Lol. But in the end you are right, what does it matter real or rep? They both tell time. Am I so insecure that I would fear being discovered? The more I think about it, No.

On the subject of fakes, we live in a world surrounded by things copied or replicated. How does the membership feel about fake boobs or veggie burgers? Are they really that offensive? :)

I have never once had someone say something about a watch. Ever.

Maybe I just hang out with people who don't care.

I can't be the only one.......

I was complimented today at a jeweler in my mall while I happened to be wearing my Milgauss GV. I was in there discussing engagement rings (I know, FML) and I was wearing short sleeves. He was the sales manager there and was was wearing a Breitling Transocean Chrono, so obviously a watch guy. He simply said 'nice Milgauss', I said thank you, and continued to discuss the ring and moved on. Short and sweet.

I was looking at 2.5 CT ring, so that made things easy and the obvious focus. I wouldn't normally wear one of my reps to a jeweler (since I have a bunch of gens), but I wasn't planning on stopping by this jeweler in the mall today. BUT, at least he seemed to take me more serious than the average shopper there, which was nice. Considering I am legitimately looking for an engagement ring, and it's going to be a pretty penny.

I'm the same way. I use to wear a quartz replay watch. I loved it. And got, honestly, an average of 2 complements a day on it.

Switch to a "higher end" rep and nothing. Not that it bothers me mind you..

I always say "thanks, I love this thing!". I pretty much shut down the conversation before it starts. A couple times people asked where I got it from, and I told them I got it second hand. (but never elaborated)

Well, the last time compliment I got was from a girl at a trade show on my Noob Pam... Then she asked if it was real.
I asked if her boobs were real, she seemed offended so I explained that her asking about my watch is basically the same as asking how much money I make, Which is more rude then me asking about the authenticity of her mammary glands... She didn't say much after that.

No really, if I'm wearing a rep it's because I'm dressed the part - So usually it's a "nice watch" followed by a "Thanks :)". Never been asked if it's fake.

Good responses. Thanks. I guess I was a bit worried about how to reply if ppl were pressing on where I got it or how much I paid, etc.

But saying I probably overpaid or it wasn't cheap are good responses. That way, I won't have to outright lie about it. I have no issues telling someone it's a rep or homage but I don't want to go around advertising it either.

Tell em its none of you f***in' buisiness pal, hit the bricks while continuing to stare at them direcectly in the face saying NOTHING ELSE,wait.......and then watch their face! Its fun!

Kidding.....

I have worn a two tone blue bezel/face rolex rep for over 3 years. People know the watch and Rolex according to a recent NYC poll is a symbol of success.

They know Rolex and Breit's are expensive. When asked how much I paid, if the have the balls enough to ask because it is just rude, simple tell them "too much". They will leave it alone!

I personally dont want anyone to know I wear a rep. I make enough to afford a gen however just feel 10k for a new or 6k for a used watch isnt that smart. I would rather have my money in my 401k collecting 3-4%.

Just IMHO

I have had many many people comment on my watch but in over 3 years, not once has someone asked if it was real!

Ok time for a quick update. Since then I have gotten a number of compliments on the Rolex LV, but this one recently tops them all. So one of the cardiac anesthesiologist that I work with whom I have seen wearing a Rolex before notices it and says "ah you got one!" He starts in with the 20 questions....

Him: When did you get it?
Me: oh a few months ago.
Him: Where did you get it from?
Me: On line.
Him: Can I see it?
Me: Sure, I take it off and hand it to him.
Him: How much did you pay for it?
Me: (in a quiet voice). It's a replica...
Him: WTF? and starts scrutinizing over the watch. Hmmm let's see, well it has the etched crown...You know I have one of these and I'd like to compare them side by side sometime.
Me: Sure. So how many of these things do you have?
Him: Do you wanna see a family portrait? He procedes to pull up a picture of 5 different rollies on his iphone. 2 tone blue sub, black ceramic gmt ii, LV, Milgauss, and daytona.
Me: Wow! they are all beautiful. Congrats...

So a week goes by and I happen to be working at this hospital again. As soon as I see him in the morning, he heads straight my way. Apparently he saw the day's schedule and noted that I would be working there and purposely wore his LV to work.

Him: Hey, I brought my LV today, let's see your watch.
Me: Ummm okay...

Side by side, It was obvious to me b/c I knew a lot of the tells. But he had to scrutinize over the watches closely comparing every detail before he could start picking out the differences. It was funny b/c when he first started the comparison, he had to mentally tell himself which one was his. He didn't want to accidently mix them up. lol.

When he noted how close the replica was and how good of a rep it was, I started sensing some angst in him. To break the ice, I said, "you know, the chinese rep almost everything these days".

Him: I know, those f'ing bastards (and then chuckles). So how much did you pay for this?
Me: about $100. Just want to check it out before I take the plunge. If I do get one, it will only be one.
Him: (calls out to one of the nurses). Carolyn, come look at this...One is real and one is fake.
Me: (Jokingly) Can you guess which is real by comparing our salaries?
Carolyn: Yeah, but he'll be bored with this in a few months and get something else.

We all had a good laugh and went our way.

It's good that he didn't get too upset about it and cause a huge scene (not that it really matters). Although, I thought it was kind of a dick move to involve that nurse in it. Wonder what the motive was there... Of course we weren't there, so it's hard to gauge if it was done jokingly and sporadically or not.

I don't think he meant anything by it at all really. As a matter of fact, I think he was actually even showing my rep off a bit. He didn't say it, but it almost felt like he was showing it off to say look how close they are, isn't that cool? Sorry for making this overgeneralization here, but this guy is a cardiac anesthesiologist. A lot (not all) of these guys, the cardiac surgeons they work with, neuro surgeons, or any of the highest paid medical personal have HUGE fuckin' egos. These guys are use to getting respect and people bowing down to them in and out of the hospital. They get their way and they get it NOW. So for him, this was an extremely friendly exchange.

Who knows, I'm sure he might have some negative thoughts about me and reps, but I don't really care. It was cool to see them side by side since I'm never going to take a rep into an AD to compare.

A very loose comparison but I did make a few mental notes when he didn't have his whole head over my watch.

-The SS on the real deal is a tad lighter in color.
-flatter and just a hair taller rehaut versus might which is a tiny bit wokky and short.
-pearl of course is a big tell compared to an unmodified rep pearl.
-the "SWISS MADE" at the 6 0'clock position is smaller on the gen.
-The dial markers on the gen have a bit more of a 3D look to them.
-Crystal height
-I didn't handle his gen but it is a bit heavier.

Overall though, most people including those who own one would probably not be able to tell it's rep without the gen to compare to. That for $100 is pretty cool IMO.

You're right about how good they are for the cost. A $5 fix you could do for the SS color is just to take some blue magic or mother's aluminum polish with a rag and very lightly rub it along the grain until you get that brighter look. I did that with a sub-c rep and compared it to my gen as I was polishing it. The whole process took about 5 minutes and came out pretty close. At least now you've seen the gen in person, and have something to go off of if you decide to polish yours.

I say thanks and check theirs as well :)

Being called out only happens if you really are wearing something out of your reach ... If I drive in in a 1996 ford taurus missing two hubcabs and wearing a AP Im asking to be called out

I have another hobby in which my money is spent ( i change cars very often and Im looking for a Maserati gran turismo 08 currently) So even though I love watches i cant spend the $$ for a gen and still change cars every 6 months ( i buy them cash )

But all of my reps are reachable to be bought as a gen.... I even have in my wish list some that i need to remove because they cost over $30000 LOL
