Timex You say...???>>>>>

It really isn't about brand to me anymore. When I first got in it was panerai or nothing. Now I rock everything including my Seikos. Heck I was even talking to R2D4 about a timex the other day lol

Just now coming across this thread...I like it. One time I had a close call while wearing my $65 21j Breitling Bentley, white face on a leather strap. Looks great on the wrist!

Anyhow... was at a concert with my girlfriend and went to get a beer. (never in a million years would I expect the beer vendor to be wearing a seemingly gen breitling chronomat! but my luck he was) I pay for my beer and he notices the wrist and says "what kind of watch is that??" I have that moment where I think should I explain the whole rep story? or pass it as gen? I simply said "oh it's a breitling". Now he wants a closer look. He looks and says oh! your stop watch is running (21j you can't stop it haha) and I thought I was busted! But he then says "yeah that's a common mistake with you young breitling owners" phew!

Well, the last time compliment I got was from a girl at a trade show on my Noob Pam... Then she asked if it was real.
I asked if her boobs were real, she seemed offended so I explained that her asking about my watch is basically the same as asking how much money I make, Which is more rude then me asking about the authenticity of her mammary glands... She didn't say much after that.

No really, if I'm wearing a rep it's because I'm dressed the part - So usually it's a "nice watch" followed by a "Thanks :)". Never been asked if it's fake.

Only compliment I've had is from a prisoner I was visiting. I was wearing a rep ceramic sub.

Him: "that's a nice watch!"
Me: "thanks"

End of.

I once had a dream about something like this. I have 35 dollar sub that I got from PA, that I'd put a nato strap on. The one thing I noticed was that there are no engravings under the lug that should say things like org Rolex Design and stainless steel, that sort of things.
I was wearing that watch when this dream occurred. I was on a double date, and I've never met this other couple. We were sitting at a dinner table, and this snobby guy had his Ulysse Nardin on the table showing it off. I couldn't tell if it was fake or not, but because he was a doctor, I thought it was real and thought I should hide my cheap sub.
But he noticed it and said, "Fancy watch you have there!", I said, "thanks". He went on to ask if he could take a look at it. I reluctantly said yes, and soon after he told me that the sub was fake. He wrote it down on a piece of paper and let me know so my date didn't notice, but he called me out.
My first experience of being called out, and even though it was just a dream, it felt disgustingly bad.

Anyhow, normally, people usually go, "nice watch", or "fancy watch" and I say "thanks". End of story. Moreover, not many notice the watch to begin with. Even if they did--how would I know--don't say anything.

My conclusion, most people just don't give a damn.

not sure if this is posted already, as I couldn't read all 7 pages. But when someone inevitably asks, how much did you pay for it, I always say "aw gawd, way too much," with a rolleyes, a kind of a 'what did I get myself into' type of gesture. They never question if I paid 2,000 or 200 bucks. Then the next question is where did you get it? Then I say "oh, I'm on a couple of watch discussion forums where they buy and sell these kind of watches, and someone I know was selling this one"

That solves the problem without telling any white lies.

What I hate the most is...

How much did you pay?

Gen or rep... Doesn't matter. It's a rude ******* question!

rude or not, they are sizing you up. they know it is an expensive watch (ie Rolex, etc) but don't know how much one of those things costs, so they ask you to see if you can really afford what they "think" it's worth.

I've been asked how much several times, before, I'd give the gen value, but I didn't feel right, cuz, then I'd look crass saying I spend $6000 on my Pam. So now, I just say I what I say and then leave them with their ignorance.

I paid MSRP from a boutique because I'm closed-minded and want to impress everyone except for myself.

It's none of their business.

Funny though.. I tell the truth in how much I paid for reps but lie about how much I pay for gens... Seriously. They would think I'm effin crazy if they knew how much this hobby costs.

True, it is none of their business, yet they want to make it their business and what you say will shape the way how they see you. Yes, again, none of their business, but when you have to deal with colleagues and business clients, it can mean alot.
