Not to further cloud the issue, but I have read elsewhere that ETA's decision is not to sell ebauche's anymore. They will continue to sell the completely assembled movements. Other companies (Selita specifically) are gearing to take up the slack. Selita was a major buyer of ETA ebauche's, they would then provide finishing services for different manufactuers. They are currently offering the sw200 which is a 2824 replacement. They also have in the works a few other movements including the sw500 which is going to be a replacement for the 7750.

It's nice to know in some case's an ETA stamp actually indicates authenticity.

Just like you can tell if a 6497 is an asian clone or true ETA you can tell on the 28xxs. The term asian ETA is very misleading and I can see it is already confusing many noobs. ETA is ETA...a "swiss" movement. Anything else is just a copy. It is like calling a rep rolex a "authentic asian rolex". It is not a true Rolex, and these asian ETAs are NOT ETA movements. As long as the dealers and their suppliers are being honest you have nothing to worry about....most of the movements being sold as ETA are swiss eta movements. If you see something being called asian eta it should be priced accordingly...just like we are all familiar with the price difference between the ETA 6497 and the asian 6497 clone. I don't know why people insist on confusing things in this hobby with misleading terms. It seems Pugwash is the only one who is willing to call BULLSHIT on these practices and inform the noobs of what is hype and what is reality.

...@ Olga, thanks for the info regarding Selita. Are they an Asian company?

...@LWA, thanks. I had seen that movement at O. Frei and wondered about that. I had been given the wrong info about the gold plated one.

...wisdom is starting to tell me that no one REALLY knows, and know one can really be sure... :) If one wants true ETA order from O. Frei or Borel etc...but I still think the movements in my Trusty's are ETA. I have no reason not to believe it...I think measuring the performance is a good indicator... :) :)

ETA 2892? I think not.

This is the next step of bullshit we'll get if we're not careful. Deliberate and outright lies.

I disagree. You can tell from a photo whether or not a movement is a real ETA with a very high degree of certainty.

...OK. Well I'm gonna have to do a side by side comparison of the real ETA and the copied one. This is something that I would really like to know about. Side by side comparison of the parts, gears, balance, etc. You mentioned that Higgy was preparing to write something about this, I eagerly await to read it......I am going to try and post a more detailed pic of the photo above, and would like your opinion on wether you think it's real ETA or not.....Thanks for all the help... :)

...Hi LWA..

...I can't wait for Higgy to do a post on the Asian movement. It is very confusing to me. I can call O. Frei right now and order 20 SWISS ETA 28XX movements for $80.00 each. Why is it so hard for the dealers to put these movements in there watches... :? You know I think if someone here on the Dark Side started doing Asian to real Swiss ETA movement conversions for the members, they might do a bang-up business... :)

Well....If you put an $80.00 movement in a typical rep, you'd have to pay $500.00 for it after all the markups were taken!!....The Typical asian movements we get only cost @$5-7.00 at the source...Average Rolex rep...@$20.00....at the source...However I'm pleased to pay $100-150 for it here in Florida!!...Lots of levels of marketing to go through!!

...yeah now you can see why I could never sell watches. I'd be losing money left and right. Although I've seen dealers that do sell them for $500.00...and I stay as far from them as I can... :)

Hi Klink!
The movements being shown on Perfect-Clones and Trusty web site and called asian ETA is WHAT?

It is a modified DG2812, 22J Chinese made with a rotor that looks like the ETA rotor. One directional winding like the Miyota. It is not a bad movement, but is not a copy of the ETA 2824 or 2836 movements. You can order this movement with the standard rotor for $ 16.50 ( possibly running at 21.6K rather than the advertised 28.8K in the so-called Asian ETA copy) from many supply houses.

I am happy that the Chinese are building these movement, but they should call them what they are.

Bye Klink!

Hello Olivia!

In a perfect world.. yes, of course they should be called what they are.. that is a given..

the curiosity of it all..

beyond deja vu all over again..

there are those who are still convinced that it is absolutely impossible to make a rep

of an ETA movement that will pass for genuine..

LOL

All the Best to You!

@cybee, Selita is a swiss company. If you would like to see their sw200 movement look for the 26j invicta submariner homage watch with the blue rotor. I don't know where they put the extra jewel. I should have added that the asian eta's we're starting to see are not the selita's.

The so-called Asian ETA will very shortly be going through Ziggy's hands where he will do a full review.

I am looking forward to this, hopefully we can get some good answers.

All the good answers in the world will not answer the question

of a good copy eta.. for if it is good enough, it cannot be told from gen..

but, then, there are many who swear on stacka bible

that the chinese cannot copy anything so good

which is confucious to say the least cause if they have well

every body would then say they

have not...

I don't think the issue at hand is a copy so good that you can't tell the difference. If they make a copy that good that you can't tell the difference and it takes ETA parts and runs like an ETA I don't think anyone would care. I thought the issue we are discussing is a movement being called an asian ETA that really has nothing to do with an ETA movement. Calling something that is not an ETA an ETA is confusing and very misleading. I assume if it was so good no one could tell the difference we wouldn't have this thread. The Chinese need to perfect their ETA copy soon, because the way things are going watches with real ETA movements are not going to be affordable because of all the price increases...

@LWA, and qyote LWA
To my knowledge for a movemnt to be considered swiss it has to be 51% swiss parts and assembled in Switzerland.
You are 100% right.. of course, that does presume 100% honesty, and not one forged invoice or bill of lading.. lol

Personally I have no problem with asian movements. My early purchases, dating back 5 years or so, undoubtedly contain the worst movements china has to offer, yet they all run like champs. My 7750 is reliable, as is my 192 with Seagull movement. The quality and construction of the watches as a whole has increased over the past few years, and I have no reason to believe that the quality of asian movements hasn't risen as well. I've got one of Trusty's Ultimate POs with the asian ETA copies on order, and couldn't be more pleased at saving about $100 on the watch.
